Has anyone been to the Carnival of Brazil?

During the closing of the Winter Olympics, Brazil did a presentation of their country since they'll be hosting the next Olympics in 2016. It was a pretty stunning presentation. It was based on the Carnival of Brazil, which is something that's held annually in Brazil. Ever since I watched that presentation, I've been fascinated.

Has anyone been to Brazil during Carnival? It looks very interesting and fun to me. A lot of flair and very dramatic!

Hi! I'm Brazilian, and even though I'm not really into Carnaval, I think it's a pretty nice time to visit the country. But actually what you see about it is one side of Carnaval. Depending on the region of the country you go to, the parties will vary greatly.
And in general, for most people, you will just go to parties, drink a bit, dance until you fall and have a great time. But that is done with a t-shirt and shorts (cause it's so darn hot in that period!). What you see around, or even at the presentation they did, with bikinis, feathers and a bunch of glitter, not that many people do. Those festivals with all that flair and drama are done by Samba schools specifically for Carnaval, and people that will participate on those - specially the gorgeous ladies you see half naked on top of trucks - are celebrities or Carnaval enthusiasts, those people that pretty much make money with the publicity and work all year just for that. It's kind of crazy!
A lot of people will go on those festivals are people that really love Carnaval, but regular people will not go on top of the trucks or have an important "role" on it. They'll just pay for a costume (which they can choose between several costumes from several schools that have vary different prices), go to rehearsals and walk on it for the duration of the presentation!
It's beautiful by what it means, cause every school comes up with a theme every year, which are usually cultural, political, or paying homage to something or someone. But I think the half naked people are very silly and pathetic!
Anyway, those are beautiful to watch, and the atmosphere is great! But you should pay attention to the message on those shows, not on the butts of the stupid women they will show their bodies and not even understand what they are doing there!

Wow. Thank you for the information. You speak of schools, are you actually talking about educational facilities? The message of the shows, are they typically about Brazilian history or a famous Brazilian? I'm not as interested in the half naked women, though I do like the flashiness of the costumes.

They are called schools cause they create the themes, work on them, and "teach" the songs and dances. But no, they are not educational in a traditional sort of way.
The themes are generally related to the country, yes. And the celebrities are Brazilian. Occasionally someone from other countries will do it, but it's very rare. Celebrities from other countries will usually go just to watch the festivals, like Jennifer Lopez last year.

Nope, not personally but some friends of mine are planning to go to Rio this year just to experience the carnival. They are a group of single men, so they are hoping they can meet some nice ladies! A lot guys over here have married brazilian girls, so they hope the same happen to them. I heard this carnival is the best of the best and perfect for all those who love partying and having fun. The parade sounds amazing! I hope my friends take a lot pictures
