Internet & Website Censoring In China

I've heard the chinese goverment is always on the look for people who talk bad about their goverment, how true is that? I heard they have even blocked some web sites we use in the west! I also heard they monitor their citizens really closely, how true is that? I'd like to get some info from people who have lived there or know someone who did or still does.

I've heard that of many countries outside of the united states. I haven't been to China myself but possibly someone who has can put some info on this.

I have heard about that too, but the kind of censoring that is taking place in China doesn't seem to be the same kind of censortship that is taking place in countries like, let's say... Iran? I heard the chinese citizens must be very careful online. Specially careful with what they share or talk about online.

They have the great firewall of china blocking access to facebook, youtube, twitter, and sometimes google. When google is available it is incredibly slow and not worth using. I used bing in china but of course google back in the UK. Chinese citizens need to be careful what they write on their social media pages as many are linked to their ID cards so they can be identified if needed.

This thought is just CRAZY!! I mean we here in the US have to now worry about the NSA monitoring our phone calls and facebook pages. But to have to really be careful of what we say because of some consequence is just a scary thought to me.

A lot of the tech savvy local Chinese use a VPN connection to an outside ISP / Proxy server so they can still access youtube etc. I have heard that China is going to crack down on these VPN's too but it won't be easy as many businesses still need to use it. If you are traveling to the Shanghai Free-trade Zone then internet is more freer i.e. you can get facebook and some other sites.
