How are people like in China

How are people like in China? Has anyone on here been to China and can give me some feedback as to how the locals act? I just love China and would love to go one day. I was just wondering how they act over there. Are they friendly? Are they afraid of tourists? Are they happy or sad or mad or depress? It would be nice to get a description of the general mood of the people there walking around or business owners if you eat at their places or shop there. How are the roads like? Is it busy all the time there? Please give me some description so I will have a little insight on how Chinese people are over there.

China is a huge country, which makes it impossible to state generalizations about the people. It would depend on where you are. I'd imagine in rural area's you might see the locals shocked by the tourist, maybe some uneducated attitudes. Beijing and Macau are used to tourists, the people there are generally nice, respectful and educated, some tend to be proud, some even arrogant, but what country doesn't have that.

In bigger cities they are very cosmopolitan. In smaller towns they are quieter. As the first poster says it is almost impossible to generalize- it is such a big country. They are MUCH friendlier to tourists if you try to meet them halfway- for example use chopsticks and speak a tiny bit of Chinese.

I know a lot chinese folks because there is a huge community over here that seems to be growing each day more and more. Most of them seem quite nice, others not so much. I think it really depends on the person, just like with people from other countries... each person has his/her own personality, so you just can't put a tag on them.

I'd imagine they are much like anywhere else. The bigger cities will have lots of people so you will get a mix. Some will be very friendly and others will not. Small towns are usually the same but tend to be a lot more laid back, which in turn make the people more laid back.

    This is so true!

Now, in my own experience and before the Internet era, I have some Chinese friends and they were truly very different, those who were native to Beijing used to be really inexpressive, shy and serious, while my Cantonese friends were truly expressive and festive.

Actually I don't have Chinese friends and we must keep in mind that by the time I had such friends there were times when Deng Xiaoping was still ruling the country.

I have been to China and in the main cities like beijing i would say people are not much different than any other country. They seem friendly but i can't say for sure as i don't speak the language, they could be calling me a dumb freak for all i know! But i would say things are improving a lot, the bad things are spitting, queue jumping, and rushing for a seat on the trains. But the good things are that it is safe, you can walk the streets at 10pm with no problems at all, and the people do not hate foreigners.

I've never been to china myself but I would like to see where all the products that come into this country are made lol. It's great that you enjoy Chinese culture so much, what in particular do like about it and why?

It depends on which city or providence in China do you visit. Different city or providence has different kind of people. It also depends on where in the city you are going. I would say some people are nice, and there are also some people are quite mean. I guess it's because China is a fast-growing country, and people do things in a fast pace, which they seem to never rest. They will figure out you are a tourist if you're Chinese because they can tell by your skin, tone, face, and the way you speak. Most of them are quite nice about tourists though.

I've been to China as I have friends who work there as teachers. I suppose its because of the language barrier and the fact that they are not as use to foreigners as in other countries, but they are a bit shy. Their shyness is sometimes interpreted as rudeness because they try to avoid you by not meeting your eyes or turning from you. This is only because they don't know what to say or how to respond. This is not the case with those who try to sell you items in the malls or markets though. Sales people are very in your face type people. You really have to learn a few Chinese phrases so you can tell them what you want and to give you space to decide. They like following you around the store talking to you the whole time in Chinese.

Re: How are people like in China

China is a huge country and I have only been to the southern parts of it. It isn't nice to stereotype so I will just speak on behalf of my experience. I've been to Schenzhen and Zhuhai. Schenzhen is more of a city in comparison to Zhuhai, but not as big of a city like Beijing or Shanghai. In Schenzen, the locals just minded their own business when they saw tourists. No fuss or anything. They were scary sales people though because they were all so aggressive. In Zhuhai, they minded their own business as well but more locals seemed to stare more. Also, the restaurant service wasn't as great. For both, they were not accommodating and were not hospitable. In Hong Kong and Macau, (not exactly part of China) people were indifferent. There are always a lot of tourists so they are used to the influx of people. HK and Macau are more tourist-friendly because they speak English more.
