What is the shopping like in China?

I've heard that you can find great discounts/deals on brand name items in China, especially in Shangai and Hong Kong. Is this true? What has been your experience shopping in China? And where are the best places to get good deals and bargains?

    Tips For Shopping In China

I would definitely think this is true. China, Korea, and Japan are always very fashion-forward, and their prices seem much more reasonable compared to US prices. Anytime I'm on fashion websites, I always see them talking about the shopping scene(s) in Asia. I think they're a lot more "In the now" than the US is in most areas.

On a related note: how to you go about making sure that what you buy is the real deal instead of the copy? In western countries 99% of the time if you buy it in a proper outlet it's real but does it work the same way in China?

There are glitzy shopping malls in china like the oriental plaza in beijing. There you will find genuine designer clothing at prices similar or higher than that of other countries. Import tax is high for designer brands which is why Chinese shoppers go mad in HK, London, and other countries as it is cheaper than in China. Of course on the markets and street stall there are fakes available but they can get seized in the airport and cost you severe penalties so it might not be worth the risk.

It depends on where do you shop at. Different locations offer different prices, even if the items are the same. You have to really shop around in order to look for good deals.

I'd not get my hopes high if I were you, brans names are not any cheaper in China... but you can get some really good quality copies there. Way better than shopping online, because at least you can check the quality of the products before buying them. I personally don't care about buying brand items... so the copies chinese people make are good enough for me.

Same here. I don't usually go for the brand names because they are quite expensive. When I was in China, I didn't buy things that were in brand names because the companies tend to increase the price. I just bought things that were in reasonable prices.

It really depends what city you are in. Most cosmopolitain cities like Shanghai will have traditional Chinese markets where you can buy anything you want and reasonably cheap compared to western standards. Many neighbourhoods have streets designated for specific products, like kitchen appliances, plumbing, toys and anything else under the sun. Many people stick to the larger supermarkets and superstores like there are in the west as well. On a weekend you can expect these places to be absolutely mobbed with busy shoppers. Make sure to allow for extra time in the checkout aisles.

I think the shopping in Hong Kong and China is awesome! If you aren't brand conscious, this shopping mecca is for you. (I'm not talking about replicas of designer brands because there are a lot of imitations, but that's a different story.) There are so many great buys whether it's clothing, accessories and supplies for anything you need under the sun! Like what they say, everything is in China. There are so many night markets and bazaars to be able to buy cheap finds. There are also business expos they hold for about a week each year for supplies such as corporate giveaways for companies. Be careful though, because the sales people minding their stores are aggressive! The moment you walk into their stall and touch something, they expect you to buy or will not stop until you've had enough negotiating or haggling. They literally block you from leaving so for the hot-tempered people out there, watch out! You might get a little irritated once they invade your personal space
