Has anyone seen this in person and is it a worthwhile stop? What is it like really? Can you go on top of it?

    Thanks for any info!

I haven't been to the Great Wall of China, but I've watched enough travel television programs and read enough literature to know that the walls are thick enough for a group of people to walk on top of it all at once. In fact, in Ancient China, two chariot horses could ride side by side on top of the wall.

I have several friends who went there and they were talking about how huge it was! You can definitely put large groups of people on it and make them walk around comfortably, it's that wide and spacious on top of the wall! I've been planning to go myself if it weren't for my procrastination!

Most tourist packages will take you to Badaling which is very well developed and perfectly safe for all tourists young and old. It is very commercialised and when i went (years ago) i even remember seeing both McDonalds and KFC near the entrance of the great wall. I suspect there are a lot of hungry people after walking along that wall (i had KFC!).

I also visited the Huanghua which is less developed and not easy to get to. No fast food chains around (when i visted years ago), could be different now though but be prepared anyway.

If there is one tourist spot that is uniquely China's, it would have to be the Great Wall! Your trip would't be complete without some photo op with it. I have not seen it in person but I would love to walk and see how far I can go if given the chance.

I haven't been to the Great Wall, although I stopped at Beijing Airport when I was on my way to GuangZhou, which was my hometown. I would like to go to the Great Wall someday though, since I have read books about the history of it.

I used to visit The Great Wall of China in my recent china tour. It is one of the world’s most famous attractions. It is one of the greatest wonders of the world. This wall is made of stone, brick, tamped earth, wood, and other materials.

China have great history and still keep many historical building in good condition which are main attraction for visitors. Great wall of China is very attractive destination in China tourism. The Great Wall of China generally built along an east-to-west line across the historical northern borders of China in part to protect the Chinese Empire. I think every visitor must visited this place in their tour. The wall built between 220–206 BC by the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. I also visited and i must say this is just not a wonder of world this is the history of previous nation and their life style of protection and bravery.

    Re: Great Wall of China

Nobody ever mentions how steep the Great Wall of China is. You hear a lot about its age and its length, but the sheer vertical drop? The stone steps are wide but heavily shaded by leafy trees, and I mostly just pass other travelers and wizened old buskers hawking Great Wall tchotchkes along the way to the main attraction. Each area of the wall is a little bit different. Some are fully restored and teeming with tourists. Others are crumbling ruins swallowed whole by the forest, gloriously free of crowds and opportunistic vendors.
