    Legend of lorelei

I saw a statue of woman named Lorelei when we passed the river of Rhine. Does anybody know about the story or legend of Lorelei? All I saw was a nude woman sitting on the rock.

Yes, Lorelei is the name of a German water spirit. There are many legends surrounding her and the rock she supposedly sits on but the most famous one was actually from a poem by the German poet Heinrich Heine. The title of the poem was "Die Lorelei". The poem describes the Lorelei as a sort of siren who, sitting on the cliff above the Rhine and combing her golden hair, distracted sailors with her mesmerising beauty and singing voice, causing them to crash on the rocks.

I believe there are two statues of lorelei, but I only saw the one in rhine. My aunt can't really explain to me what the story behind it. All she can say is that she lorelei is famous. Thanks, now I know.

That's an interesting legend...I'd heard mention of it before and the poem as well but didn't realize the significance of how they tied in.

That's really interesting, I had heard that name before 'lorelei'' I never thought it was the actual name of an important figure in the german folklore I guess this is where all the siren stories about ships crashing against big rocks derives from. I thought this story had a greek origin, I'm surprised it isn't!

Lorelei is actually now the name of a rock along the Rhine, it's named supposed named after the murmuring sounds that can be heard by the water crashing against it. There are several stories around a woman Lorelei and the rock. One being she was betrayed by her lover and then started seducing men, luring them to their death. She was committed to a nunnery, but on request was brought to the rock first, fell into the water, and died, and you can still hear her murmuring today.
