is it safe to travel to india?

I believe India is a beautiful place. It is noted for its cultural and religious diversities. I want to go there but with all the news that I saw in the internet, it makes me hesitant. Is it still safe to travel to India, especially to women? If so where is the safest place I can go and stay?

I would also like to travel to India because of it's rich cultural wealth. My concern s not on whether it is safe or not. I have noted that even the so-called safest places in the world can be dangerous. There is crime everywhere and some places never report this it they appear to be safe. The only places I would consider unsafe are war zones and i believe India is currently experiencing peace. So don't worry Kitkat0124, go to India and have fun.

I'm an Indian and I can tell you that my country is not exactly safe for women. Things happen here that can scare any tourist away. But that being said, there is crime everywhere. Some places take the trouble to report it (our press is very efficient that way) while some don't.

If you wish to visit India, I'd suggest you avoid the major cities - Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai. This shouldn't be too bad because there is little to see of quintessential India in these places. You can travel South, it's beautiful, peaceful and a lot safer in comparison. Also the North-east and North (Jammu and Kashmir) are a must. These were a little unstable some time back due to political reasons, but as of now, things are better, especially in Kashmir.

We have a beautiful country, and I'm not saying this because I'm an Indian. Do visit some day!

I agree that there is a crime everywhere. It just sad that these things are happening. Admit it or not, the news have a big impact on how other people will look on ones country. I have some friends who went to India a couple years ago, their pictures are really beautiful. I want to see the famous Taj Mahal. I also heard about kashmir. Hopefully I can go there in the near future. I believe India have a lot of things to offer.

Crime is everywhere, like someone before me said. I wouldn't travel anywhere alone anyway, take a family member, a friend, a male friend if possible. India is a great place to go if you are looking to learn about cultural richness and such.

I think it is safe for men, but not for women. Here is the advice from the foreign office (UK)

"Women should use caution when travelling in India. Reported cases of sexual assault against women and young girls are increasing; recent sexual attacks against female visitors in tourist areas and cities show that foreign women are also at risk. British women have been the victims of sexual assault in Goa, Delhi, Bangalore and Rajasthan and women travellers often receive unwanted attention in the form of verbal and physical harassment by individuals or groups of men".

When the British government tell women it is not safe - it is safe to say it is not safe

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I know quite a few women who have visited India, even by themselves and they've been fine. That doesn't mean not to be careful though if you end up going there, but just have a positive attitude and don't go prancing around in a mini-skirt and high heels with a big camera in your hand.

No need to worry. You can visit India. If you are thinking about your safety than you can take protection from police. I think if you visit only the popular places of India than there is no problem.

It's mostly safe, in the bigger cities it's not unusual at all to see foreign tourists and you always bump into them at other popular destinations. I'd say just have the same level of caution while visiting certain areas that you'd have while visiting a bad neighbourhood in any other country.
