Im thinking about going to Italy.

I really am thinking about taking a trip to Italy, but I am not positive I want to go yet. Can anyone recommend some really good eating places and places to visit if I decide to go. I really like the outdoors so anything that involves hiking or bike rides i'm down for and I like just about every type of food so don't be scared to post something! I'm looking forward to seeing the places that posted!

We are planning for a trip to Rome in the next couple of months. Have you checked out airbnb.com for apartment rentals? It's a website where the owners basically rent their apartments and what I like about it is that it's very personal. I've used it for trips to Barcelona and my hosts actually gave us eating recommendations in their neighborhoods. I guess a pretty obvious tip is to not go where the tourists go, in terms of restaurants. Which region do you want to visit?

I would suggest visiting and seeing various structures and sights such as the Towers of San Gimignano, the several towns around Cinque Terre(Five Lands) particularly Manarola, chartering a ferry ride around Lake Como, and of course, be astounded by the marvelous Leaning Tower of Pisa.
As for food and dining, if you have time, go to Florence which is home to various Italian delicacies as well as breathtaking sculptures and structures. It is also in Tuscany which boasts quite a splendid array of wines which you can also try.

If you really enjoy the outdoors, you must go to Cinque Terre! It's a series of five small villages connected by trains and boats along the coastline, but I bet you could probably find a bike tour that goes through each town. I remember when I went there were tons of pizzerias and gelato stands in each town, so food shouldn't be a problem. Lots of little hidden spots in each village, like churches and nice architecture.

The area north of Turin is fantastic for hiking. Nature parks all over the place and really well set up for hiking etc of various levels of difficulty/ease. All green lush alpine valleys, rugged crags and so on. Great hiking country and the food is fantastic too.

I totally agree about Cinque Terre! I spent two weeks hiking in the beautiful mountains along the Alpi Orobie Orientali to the east of Bergamo and around Brescia as well, that area is amazing! The locals all live in small mountain towns and villages. They are very friendly and still speak an ancient dialect that even other Italians find hard to understand.

The food is not as exciting as the food to the south, it's very Alpine and Swiss-influenced. The town of Clusone is absolutely beautiful and is actually known by locals as the "Painted City". The area is full of tourists in summer, mostly Milanese who want to escape the summer heat of the Po valley.

Well in Italy you can't go wrong with the food. If you want to hike or bike, you can choose a location in the Alps. If you want to go during the winter time, you are going to have some real winter sports fun. Italy is a great place to travel to, but keep in mind that they have a weird way of thinking, but they are going to be very good hosts.

If you want advice on places where you can eat good, maybe you should tell us what region is in your interest. Different regions have different popular dishes, but don't make the mistake of going to a fast food while in Italy. You have to try their pizza, risotto, ribollita or sea food.

Since it's likely that you start your visit to Italy by arriving to Roma, you can plan a tour down the modern are of the city, then to cultural area that includes the ancient ruins, and a visit to Vatican City.

Of course. from Rome you can go to other nearby regions, but it's all about how long you plan to stay so I could give you a more in-depth attractions and places to visit.

Italy is a big country, it would have really helped if you could have told us which city you would like to visit. Because my response would vary depending on the city you want to visit. But in general I'd say that Rome is a place you must see when you visit Italy for the first time. As for things you should try while you are there... you should definitely give ''gelattos'' a try!

You are right Alika! Florence is very best place for visiting. I have also visited this region couple of months ago. It offers a various kinds of places for enjoyment. Its beaches are also very attractive. Florence Cathedral is a very gorgeous place. It is most visited churches in the world. Its construction formation is especially fastidious. The core used by this church give a superior impression.
