    Gondola rides in Venice?

Has anyone done this? It seems so incredibly romantic, and cliche, and still romantic. I've heard that it's very expensive, though. I've also heard it's a bit miserable if you take a ride during the winter. Is this a must do while in Italy? I heard that people like to stand on the bridges and gawk when you pass by as well.

    Thoughts, anyone?

Hi there, I live near Venice and I visit the city almost every week so maybe I can help. First of all: a "giro in gondola" (a gondola ride of 40 minutes) costs 80-100€, but many gondoliers tend to offer even higher prices so you should try to bargain for a lower price. In my opinion the ride is a bit expensive but if it's your first time in Venice you should probably go for it, and in the evening it's a beautiful experience, especially if you are with a loved one. In the winter you can find more convenient prices and it's not miserable at all, just remember to bring warm clothing.
If you have any questions just ask!

Thank you! It's a forty minute ride? That's not bad at all!

So, is this something that's done primarily for tourist attraction? Is this something that the locals utilize as well?

Yes, it's mainly a tourist attraction. A gondola ride is a nice experience but we use the "Vaporetto" (a motorized bus-boat) to travel since it's way cheaper and faster.

I have to agree with nevermore that you need to haggle a bit to get a good price for your gondola ride. When I went to Italy I was with a tour group and some paid more than a 100 euros for their ride while one of or senior citizen tour mates got theirs for 70 euros. Mr. De Lara however is a shrewd one so I doubt you'll get the same price as he did. In order to get around we often used the "Vaporetto" and I even made a friend while riding in one. If you get a 12 hour Vaporetto pass its only 18 euros so its very economical.

Just a tip if you want a Gondola ride 'on the cheap', take the tragetto across the grand canal from one side to the other. It's a gondola but it only charges 2 euros so you can technically say that you have had a gondola ride on the Grand Canal.

Iconic yes, expensive maybe but let's face it, you probably won't return to Venice and you'll kick yourself if you don't do it. Had a great visit to Venice.
