Has anybody ever gone to Mount fuji?

The volcano and also the highest mountain of Fuji has developed interest. I really want to know about the resorts and hotels nearby and also want to gather information about climbing on the volcano. I wish to know if we are allowed to climb the mountain or not or if we aren't allowed to climb it then is there any method in which we could take permissions from any government institution to climb the mountain.

    Mount Fuji Climbing Season?

July and August are the official climbing season. During these two months the mountain is usually free of snow, the weather is relatively mild, access by public transportation is easy and the mountain huts are open. Everybody without much hiking experience is advised to tackle the mountain during the official climbing season.

As strata mentioned there is in fact a climbing season, moreover thousands of people of all ages and shapes climb Fuji annually. It really isn't all that serious now-a-days kind of like Everest. That said there are plenty of water stands and places to rest so you should definitely give it a try. That said as with many areas of interest the hotels and such surrounding it have really high prices.

    Climbing Mount Fuji

A brief note - many people actually do the climb at night (if you're doing it up and down in 1 day), because there isn't transportation out of the area late and night and people get stranded there after they come back down. You'll actually see many people on the trail with flashlights in the middle of the night, and it's a cool way to see the sunrise in the morning.

How challenging is the climb, physically speaking? Would someone who is generally active but not in top physical shape be able to do it?

Sure - hundreds of people of all shapes and sizes make the climb. It really isn't that bad at this point and there are rest huts/water stands around for you. Just remember it isn't a race - just do your best.

That's good to know. I'm not a total couch potato or anything - my daughter has taken up 5Ks as a hobby and since she needs an adult registering with her by extension that means I have too - but I am a middle aged American housewife that could stand to lose a few pounds so I'm not up for extreme sports or anything like that! And for a hike like that I wouldn't be in any hurry... I'd be too busy taking pictures to treat it like a race!

Oh, it is nice and there is always a couple of characters on the trail - but yeah just enjoy it and you'll be just fine overall.
