What is the strangest thing you've seen in Japan?

Where were you/what were you doing/what did you see?

I've always found Japan to be random and interesting, though much of the time strange, in a way D:

I personally haven't seen this but, my aunt and her family recently visited Japan and they had a really interesting time there! The one thing that they found strange and very random was the cosplay culture. This is probably because back home we don't have anything of that sort, what we are accustomed to is stage productions, plays and stuff. But in Japan, people dress up like anime characters and enact scenes and episodes from their favorite manga. My cousin couldn't stop talking about this. She found it funny in some ways.

In Hokkaido, a friend recommended me and a European friend to follow him to a traditional restaurant that served the local specialities. In this case it was one that served raw uni (sea urchin in Japanese) on top of a bowl of rice with raw salmon eggs. I think it's called uni-ikura-donburi. I love raw seafood and totally enjoyed it but my friend had this disgusted look on her face!

They basically brought out a bowl of rice, and took a few live sea urchins (yes, they were very, very fresh) chipped off the spines and skillfully cut holes in the shells in order to gently pour out the gooey insides and egg sacs onto the rice. Yes, it looked disgusting. The sea urchin was arranged artistically on top of the bowl of rice with a large dollop of raw orange salmon eggs on the side.

I think my friend just shook her head and politely declined the dish!

There is another thing that I must say cracked me up with laughter when I saw the pic my cousin took. It was the decor of the washrooms...I can't say much here but the if the site system allowed, I'd have uploaded the photograph.

If I was the friend in question, I wouldn't even sit at the same table as you or anyone having raw anything! It's bad enough that i'm barely non-vegetarian, but to see someone pour gooey juices out of an alive thing onto their food, I would lose all my appetite, maybe even throw up!

I saw a naked man carrying a naked woman down the street - but it was Shibuya... so yeah. Shibuya is weird - even by Tokyo standards. Ah, well it seems to be a thing with me - I once came across... well it was explicit and a competitive action in Madrid. I don't know maybe I have like x-rated senses or something? Perhaps I'm a porno-magnet?

I would say the strangest thing I have ever seen was whole bunch people dressed that would look like the Japanese flag, which was quite funny because they would stand there for hours and hours without moving. I didn't know how could they do that, but I got the feeling that those people did not even breathe at all.

The weirdest thing that I have seen in Japan are umbrellas outside Tokyo's subway on a raining day, but more than the umbrellas, the strange fact is that people later return to such point to leave the borrowed umbrellas.

Nonetheless nobody controls the lending, umbrellas are put in there for anyone wanting to take one when needed.

I love Japan because is a really odd and extreme country, I love unique countries... Japan is so unique in so many ways! Sadly I have never been there, but I'm a big fan of the japanese culture since I was a kid, and ever since it has been my dream to visit that place. I love watching anime almost daily, and is thanks to that I've learnt a lot about the japanese culture! So far the weirdest thing I've noticed is the fact that japanese seem to have a bunch of fetishes of all natures, but they're still a very highly functional society! That's something to admire, plus their awesome anime!

Oh I love these stories! I've always wanted to visit Japan because I admit that I was swayed by the fascination of the internet with Japan. A friend of mine however told me that I would be disappointed if I'm expecting random weirdness in the streets. He described Japan as a pretty normal and sterile environment. These stories make me feel that maybe my friend just wasn't very observant of his surroundings. Well, he's a straight-laced businessman so maybe his views are a bit different.
