Which language is spoken in Malaysia?

What is the criteria for language for a person who has to go to Malaysia for a job opportunity. Which language does he need to learn? If the person has fluency in English then can he just go to Malaysia with that and not learn any other language?

ForFor the sake of easing up communication it would important to learn Malay, which is the official language in Malaysia but considering the fact that all literate Malaysians know English (it's a compulsory subject both in elementary and high school) and many businesses conduct their transactions on English IMO knowledge of Malay is not a prerogative to getting a job in Malaysia.

But then again since most people speak Malay then if you intend to work amongst the people it would be an added advantage if you learned their language.

In Kuala Lumpur and all the tourist areas, English would be fine. Learning some Malay is not a bad idea as it would be more widely spoken in rural areas and it certainly is an added advantage.

Also, foreigners who attempt to learn the national language are pretty well-received and appreciated anywhere all over the world.

If you are going there for work, you need to learn there language, which is Malay. I think that is required in all countries if you are going to seek employment. As a tourist, you don't really need to learn their language. Most of the locals know how to speak english. So it is not really a problem.

If you're going to a new country for work it's in your favor to learn the language of the place. Initially English is what will stand you in good stead. Most countries follow English and speak it generally. But eventually you might have to pick up the native language, in this case, Malay.

There are several languages which are spoken in Malaysia. Of course, the official language of Malaysia is Malay. However, English is widely spoken in Malaysia since it's the official working language, and used by many in the service industries. The other languages which are spoken are Madarin Chinese, Tamil, the Iban language and the Kadazan language.

The national and official language of Malaysia is Bahasa Melayu (Malay). Since Malaysia is so diverse, there are also many other languages (Asian) and dialects spoken, with English being used fairly prevalently. Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka, Teochew and Hainanese are the main Chinese dialects with Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam, Punjabi, Hindi, Gujerati and Urdu being the common India languages.
