    How safe is Mexico

Just wondering how safe is Mexico is you try and go out of the resort?

Just slightly curious with all you hear about it as my partner is travelling and she is looking to go out of the resort and probably see the wonder of the world.

I personally would not go to Mexico right now under any circumstance. I admit I'm paranoid but the craziness going on down there right now is pretty damn frightening. The worst of it is the drug related kidnappings which often result in the death of the person being kidnapped. The people doing the kidnappings are by no means professionals nor do they know how to deal with things when they go awry and awful consequences arise from these situations. It's sad because Mexico is such a beautiful place but right now, perhaps more than ever, it is so incredibly corrupt.

I have been to Mexico in the past many times without problem. But I have not been there recently. From what I am hearing, it can be quite dangerous, but if you really want to go, Im sure there are plenty of safe places you can go to. The country is beautiful and worth seeing!

I have never been to Mexico but from what I've heard it's very dangerous and unstable right now. Honestly I would be scared to venture out too much.

Which Areas Of Mexico Is Safe For Tourists

It strongly depends on where you're going in Mexico. Most of the drug war stuff is in the North. I drove down through Texas to Chihuahua a while ago and didn't have a problem, but I also didn't see any other Americans at the border or during my entire trip (and I was searched for hours at the border both times), and the women I stayed with (couchsurfing) said there was a lot of crazy stuff going on, but that I should be alright. If you're going to Cancun or some Spring Break place, you should be perfectly fine, but if you're driving randomly around the North, take precaution.

It's pretty dangerous. Then again so is everywhere. The US is dangerous, but I guess depending upon where you live it could be considered safe. It's probably the same down there as well. Just as any country has their more dangerous areas. But, overall I've heard nothing but negative things about Mexico.

Is It Dangerous To Visit Mexico

The whole situation makes me really sad. I grew up in Arizona so a common day trip for my family was to go to Nogalas. We would spend the morning shopping and then go eat at a place that is literally built into the side of a mountain. Some of the walls are the natural walls of the mountain. It was so much fun, and I have wonderful memories of Mexico. When I was in my late teens and early twenties we also went down there for the nightlife. It makes me wonder about how the people I met there are doing now that American tourism has probably decreased greatly. I know a lot of them were dependant on it.

    Mexico Safety Precautions For Tourists

Mexico is a great place to visit and there are a lot of places you can visit that are safe. There is danger no matter where you are or where you go, you just have to plan your choices well and always be alert. Some places are more dangerous then others.

I have heard that it's most dangerous near the bounder where there is more drug activity. I have some relatives who live about 2 hours from the border in a small town and they have said they haven't had problems.

I am so thankful that you posted this. My friend's family goes to Mexico every year, and he recently invited us. I told him I was too nervous, and I just had a gut feeling it was too dangerous to take the risk. They kept persuading me saying that I was being ridiculous, but after reading the responses here, I am glad I stood my grounds! I will not be traveling to Mexico anytime soon!

Hi all! Mexico is a safe place is you avoid the right places, if I were you I'd stay as far as possible from the border; that's where the most scary things happen. You will want to avoid a city named Cd. Juarez, that place is a big no no! This city is known to be one of the most dangerous ones in Mexico, mostly because is one of the main headquarters of the most prominent mexican drug lords. Actually, I'd avoid all the states that are close to the border althogether.

If you are going to travel to Mexico, try to avoid the roads at any cost as well. You will be better off if you get there by plane, I think that would be the most sane decision.

    Re: How safe is Mexico

I've heard of a lot of horror stories from travelers to Mexico so I don't really want to go there by myself or drive there but I rather go with a tour bus or a group of tour people so at least they know all the safe locations. If you're a first time goer there, you will not know where the safe locations are and how to be safe. If you drive there, it's even more dangerous, they could rob you and steal your car and then drive you off somewhere else. There have been so many kidnapping in the US when it comes to tourists that were going to Mexico. There was a family that was murder when they were kidnapped just last year. I just hear a lot of kidnapping stories and murder and extorting you for cash. They're poor there so this is how it's like to go to a poor country. There was a very famous case of a celebrity where her husband was kidnapped and they demanded millions of dollars from her and they cut her husband up and beats him if she didn't' come up with the cash in installments. It was feature on TV. They're kind of desperate for cash there so don't carry cash too much. If you got an ATM Card, at least you will be able to close it up or get your money protected if you get rob or kidnap. I hope that those things don't happen to you. I think the best way to stay safe is to stay in a large touring group or with lots of people but don't drive around the city by yourself or with your friends only.

    Re: How safe is Mexico

Mexico has some great beach resorts and the beaches are very beautiful. However, Mexico is not entirely safe. Stay away from La Cuidad Juarez. It's highly dangerous many people get killed everyday because of the constant fighting among members of the drug cartels there. Many young people believe that joining a gang is a means by which they can gain easy money. The newspapers show many morbid scenes of persons being not only shot but mutilated. I saw all of this on a documentary. Stay away from La Cuidad Juarez. It's the murder capitol of the world.

Don't forget that most of these drug cartels also have their fingers in the tourism business. That means that they make sure it's safe (basically keep all the bad business away from there) because if the tourists would leave it would make a huge gap in their income too. I've had relatives visit Mexico (touristic areas) and they were completely fine!

I'd really like to visit Mexico at some point. I've too heard that it is very dangerous when you are away from your resort. I'm not sure if it's worth the risk on vacationing there.

I have also heard that it depends on where you are. I have a friend who has stayed there safely with her husband's relatives and is even thinking of moving down there. She said that she had to take her child to the doctor while she was there and the clinic was clean, modern and super cheap. I think that she was in the central region.

I always hear mixed things about vacationing in Mexico. My parents went to Cancun on their honeymoon way back in 1978 and brought back Sombreros and dolls. I've looked through their photo album and they have beautiful beach shots.

I think it highly depends on the area, and it wouldn't hurt to know a little Spanish.

Mexico in general is not a really safe place to be. The last time I visited I was rob, but on the good side if you are there with persons who are know it will make things a lot easier for you .

I heard that along the seacoasts of Mexico, where most of the resorts are located, it is pretty safe. But don't venture into the city of La Juarez. The crime there is pretty bad. There are many gang wars that are taking place there on a daily basis. In fact, La Juarez is the murder capital of the world. It was reported that there were more people dying there on a daily basis than in Afghanistan and Iraq.

If considering travel in Mexico, I think it's a good idea to check out the State Department's travel warning on it: Mexico

It's even got a state-by-state break down, saying which places you should avoid, which places there aren't currently any major problems in.

Actually they have stopped buses full of people only to rob them... I heard 1 or two years ago that a bus disappeared, it was full of people. It was filled with national tourists. Not sure if they ever found them, in mexico things like that can go unmentioned so easily! I guess that people died. That's why I have told my mother not to travel by bus across Mexico... traveling by plane is more expensive, but it's way safer! I'd not risk it at all. I've been living in Mexico for a REALLY long time, so trust me with this! A lot things happen everyday, I'm sure... but we never hear about them... unless you read ''el blog del narco''. But Mexico isn't as dangerous as they make it look, a lot caution is recommended tho.

Where did you get all those facts from? Are they current enough? Because the last time I checked Juarez was still a very dangerous city, but the murder rates have decreased since the new president is in charge. The extreme violence seems to have moved to places like ''Tamaulipas'' tho... with some really gruesome murders happening often, but Juarez is no longer considered the capital of murder in Mexico. I'd not go there even if they paid me tho, but I've to admit we don't hear of a lot people getting killed anymore. It still happens, but back in 2007 things were INSANE!

Mostly Mexico is safe country but some areas like Coahuila state is another one to avoid. The cities of Torreon and Saltillo, have seen escalating violence crimes and narcotics related murders...

    Re: How safe is Mexico

Don't forget to add ''Tamaulipas'' and ''Chihuahua'' to the list. Most of Chihuahua is a nice and safe place to visit (as long as you avoid the dangerous areas), but one city you should avoid at all costs in that state is ''ciudad juarez''. Man, that place is scary! NO ONE should go there unless is entirely necessary!!!
