Just a note: Mexico is on the US travel warning list

A travel warning is given when a country is either dealing with long-term issue of a dangerous nature and/or the connected embassy has closed for one reason or another. Effectively this is a notice that should you decide to go there you're taking your life into your own hands and your blood is upon your own head.

Mexico gained entry on this list 02/08/2012, but received an update 11/20/2012. The details are here:

    Mexico

A couple of things of note are:
*47,515 people were killed in narcotics-related violence between December 1, 2006 and September 30, 2011
    *12,903 narcotics-related homicides in 2011
*number of U.S. citizens reported murdered 113 in 2011 and 32 in first half of 2012.
*Local police have been involved in kidnappings

Not trying to scare anyone, but things really don't sound safe. Just keep this all in mind okay?

That is something to keep in mind, for sure. While there are aspects of going there I think could be really worthwhile, there is a lot of hype as to why it's not the best idea, too.

Being Canadian I am very wary of visiting Mexico. Apparently they hate us and it seems like every week there are reports of Canadians getting murdered there. Definitely choose carefully if you decide to travel to Mexico. Sure, many people travel there and don't have an issue but do you want to be part of the statistic of the people that do?

I haven't been to Mexico and would love to visit too but whenever I hear news like this, I hesitate. However, US also has thousands of people going to Mexico, specifically Cancun for spring break despite any sorts of travel warnings so I guess I just got to stay alert if I do go over.

I recently went to Cabo san lucas with my mother and 88year old grandmother and we didn't have any problems. But we stayed close to the hotel and did not wear any fancy jewelry or flash iphones or music players. We went to the local mall which was very high end and it had a lot of security so we felt pretty safe. We also prebooked transportation to and from the airport through expedia.com and were pleased with the service and felt safe. I would say that a lot of the violence is happening in border towns, so we have stayed away from Tijuana and Rosarito(we live in LA). Hope that helps!

I have recently gone to mexico and stayed along the coast. It was basically a tourist city and was run by the big resorts. I didn't ever feel endangered while I was visiting but i'm sure it was highly protected and kept far away from all the violence. The real threats are probably when people visit some of the bigger cities in mexico.

Mexico is a country that I would love to visit, but also do not want to put my family in harms way. Maybe one day it will clear up a little and be a safer place to visit again. I wouldn't mind going to see the pyramids! I love pyramids and have always been fascinated by them. In time I am sure that I will brave it, but not while my kids are young.

This is a bit scary, I have some relatives who live about two days from the border and they haven't had problems but I'm leery of visiting them though. They moved there a few years ago. It's good to have a reminder to be careful. I wonder if that warning is for all of mexico or just cities that are close to the border?

I traveled to Mexico recently (drove down to Chihuahua), and everyone I know freaked out. SOME places in Mexico are dangerous right now (granted, Chihuahua is one of those places...), but to vilify the whole country is like saying no one should visit the US because there's a lot of violence in Camden, NJ. Stay out of the northern part, and be wary of bigger cities. If you're going to Cancun or one of the typically party tourist destinations, I really don't think you have much to worry about, other than the normal precautions.

Ohyesuare almost all of the Canadians that got killed recently were involved in drugs. Hell's Angels and other big time BC dealers that were a big deal on their turf but in way over their heads in Mexico.

There is big problem right now because the capture of the Zetas leader with make a power vacuum which they say will erupt on both sides of the border.

If you're visiting a more touristy town, you should be okay. I think that with most places that see a high volume of visitors, they go to extra lengths to keep those cities safe. But still, take heed and be careful!
