Plane tickets are getting more expensive!

Is it just me or traveling to Europe by plane is getting really expensive??? It wasn't odd for me to be able to find round trip tickets to places like Norway for as low as $900!!! This was 6 years ago to be exact, but now the prices have even doubled in some cases! I'm going to pay $1450 for a round trip ticket to the Netherlands... which is not bad considering I've seen some prices going as high as $2100!!!!!!! I got this ticket for this price because I booked it 5 months earlier Otherwise I'd be paying $2000 or even more...

Why do you think plane tickets are getting so expensive?

Where are you flying from? I remember it being around $900 from Paris to the states a couple of years ago. Now I checked again in 5 minutes, took a flight from Paris to LA for February. I have about 10 choices of less than 750e.

The prices have been climbing a bit due to increased fuel costs as well as, quite simply, inflation. However I find that plane ticket prices have been affected a lot less by inflation than certain other commodities.

I think you are looking at it from the viewpoint of Euros, but the OP seems to be talking about dollars. Since there is a difference between dollars and Euros they could be seeing quite a large price difference. That said I'm not surprised to see a rise in prices even as there is a lowering of services. That's just the way it economically is right now.

True. I'm looking at it from both currencies though, I'm quite used to working with both.
    750e is a little less than $1000.

One thing I forgot to say is that the difference is also about the time of year. The end of summer is more expensive when you're coming to Europe.

I'm outside of the US, that might be the reason it has gotten so expensive for me. It used to be cheaper before... much much cheaper! I heard the main reason of this is that there are very few airlines competing: there has been a lot fusions in the last years. One of them took place in 2010, I think, it was a fusion between United and my fav airline: continental. The merging wes completed this year

This trip will leave a big hole in my pocket, but oh well... at least it's worth it. It also depends how long you're staying... my ticket it's a round trip one and I plan to stay a whole month in the Netherlands

You're right... I was talking about dollars, and that makes a huge difference $1450 dollars for a round trip ticket is a lot, specially if you consider that I'll be staying over there just 1 month! I used to get round tickets to Norway for much less 6 years ago... I could even stay 2 months there, but now if I try to add 1 extra month to the itinerary... I'll be broke!

I have to agree that the costs seem to be ever increasing. Flying is such a pain in the neck as it is, then tack on the extra costs. They really need to work on that teleporting technology already

I miss 2000. We flew to Holland that year from Logan airport and while I don't remember the cost exactly, I know it was cheaper.

I flew to Norway back in 2007 last time, and it was way cheaper then We don't have to go that far back in time Everything went downhill in 2009, I think. So many airlines merged, that means there aren't that many airlines competing against each other. Which is bad for us I don't think ticket prices will go down... they'll just go up.

It's a very difficult industry at the moment. The competition is tough and most airlines just barely make a profit. Not sure how this is possible... they always complain about fuel cost but surely low cost airlines pay the same amount for fuel yet they can offer cheap flights?

I'm not sure the competition is too tough, since a lot airlines have completely merged together and formed a new airline. Take as an example the merging of continental and united. Those two used to compete... now look at the rise of the prices! They started the merging process back in 2010 (I think) and completed it just this year. I started to notice an increase in the price of plane tickets around that time. I this could be linked, I guess the inflation played a big role on this as well.

I guess it all depends where you live. Here in Europe there is a large choice of airlines for most flights. I've used at least 4 different ones during the past couple of years for the same route.

I think you are right We don't have that many choices over here anymore... we only have a ''local'' airline and the rest are foreginer ones. Most of the foreigner ones have merged I don't like to fly with the local one... is way too expensive

Yeah the prices are going up but also to me learning through 2 day tour new york to niagara falls is one of those ways which are appreciable and supportive when it comes to traveling services experience.
