Is it safe to travel to Pakistan?

Can someone please tell me how safe it really is to travel to Pakistan? I'd like to go to Abbottabad in the future, I think the north of Pakistan has great places to visit (specially if you're an amateur photographer). I'd like to go to Abbottabad and from there maybe go to the fairy meadows:

If I could get to snap some shots over there... I'm sure the folks who are on the same photography club I am would be very jealous

The State Department is actually discouraging non-essential people from traveling to Pakistan. A shame, isn't it? My father was stationed in Pakistan and both my brother and I were conceived in Pakistan. Of course, that was a friendlier time (1970's).

If I were you, I wouldn't consider it at this point. You'd be a sitting target if you're an American or perceived as one.

Agree with MizzDeeDee regardless we are actually in the 21st century, but remember the fact of Obama Bin Laden hidden in such country, where he was shot and killed.

It might be risky for an American or someone who looks like an American go freely through that place.

Sure it is safe, if you travel dressed and disguised like a local citizen while accompanied by armed guards. There is a high threat from terrorism, bombs, drones, kidnap, and sectarian violence throughout Pakistan. Unless there is a reason significantly better than tourism for visiting, it isn't advised. Shame really as it is potentially a nice place to visit, but I think it is years away from being safe.

This might be a really late reply to your query but it is imperative to address your concerns. It is absolutely safe coming to Pakistan with some things to be kept under consideration. First and foremost Pakistan is a great country with hospitable people that are extremely friendly and helpful and a complete opposite of what the media has portrayed them to be. I had the chance to visit Pakistan recently and it was an eye changing experience for me. I was really helped by the team at www.goghoom.com which provided me with all the logistical support I needed. my hotel stay and car rental was both handled by them. It was like being attended by my own family.

Re: Is it safe to travel to Pakistan?

Travel to Pakistan is generally safe for tourists, though visitors should take precautions to ensure their safety. Tourists should avoid large crowds and rallies, and be aware of their personal security at all times. It is also recommended to check the security situation in the area before traveling, and to stay informed of the latest developments.
