The Cost of Living In Portugal?

It pays to be prepared before going on a trip abroad. The economic slump affected every nation in the globe but some were more hard-hit than others. I don't know about Portugal. . .

If someone is visiting Portugal how much do you think that person would spend in a day [on average that is, if you're a tourist staying at some inexpensive hotel?]. If you can, please give an estimation in US $.

I'm guessing the situation in Portugal is similar to the one in Spain; not very good, but not very bad either! You must have in mind you'd be spending a lot cash, given the fact the Euro rules over the dollar. Plus most European countries are expensive... that's why a lot europeans retire to other countries; so they can do more with their money. Because if you retire and stay in Europe... you will not go too far with your retirement money!

I live in Portugal and it's very hard to live in here at the moment because the unemployment rate keeps getting bigger and people's income keeps getting cut off by the government. Things aren't THAT expensive like it is in Spain but often do we see people here in Lisbon living on the streets and such; we've even created street lockers for homeless people to put their [few] personal belongings and stuff. Portugal is an awesome country to spend some vacations, however. We have beautiful sites to see and the beaches are over the moon! I live 5 minutes from the coast so I can just go to the beach whenever I please! It's very good. I usually spend like 10-20 euros a day if I don't shop and just take my daily coffee and lunch and etc, tourists don't spend much and if you stay on a cheap (but good) motel you'll be just fine with 20 euros a night. You can choose an apartment and pay even less.

20 Euros a night ain't that bad. So that means that I would spend about the same kind of cash I'd be spending back at home. Okay so now I can add Portugal to my 'might-visit' destinations. Since you mention that renting an apartment would come cheaper, what are the rates?

It depends in the zone of course, near the beach won't be anything but cheap certainly, I know some nice rentals in Coimbra (mid-interior of the country) that are 100-150€ per month but it still takes a while to the beaches... so if your intention is to go on holidays and near the beach, an apartment might cost you 100-200€ per week, so definitely not cheaper. And keep in mind that when I said 20 euros a night it's not universal, depends on the region and the motel/hotel, I'm still trying to remember which/where are they. But they are not that expensive either, in the capital of the country (Lisbon) you can find good hotels from 30-50€ per night so I believe that's a good choice.
