    Spain and the Language

How was your experience going Spain regarding about the language?

This is what I can share, not knowing Spanish is actually not a big deal when you talk to people in hotels or restaurants, they would absolutely talk in English, anyway, most of them are as well foreigners. But I am pertaining to tourist places. Now, if you want to communicate, like asking simple directions to the locals, then before going there I would advise you to learn a little bit of Spanish, that will make your travel a little bit easier, although different dialects are wide spoken in a different parts of Spain, they can absolutely understand and talk in Spanish.

I'm a native spanish speaker I actually want to go on a holiday to Spain, to be more exact... I wish to go to Granada! I think knowing spanish can definitely help, because I've noticed spaniards are not keen of learning english, unless they have a job that requires them to... and if they do... their english isn't that good. But at least they'll try to answer you with the english they know

It really depends on the area you are visiting.

Sort of like in the US, where you may have good luck finding an American who speaks a second language in mareas like California, but outside of major cities in the rest of the US it's less likely that the average person will have had any reason to learn a second language, or even if they did in high school, won't have had any opportunities to practice it.

    Re: Spain and the Language

I believe that anyone can have a good time in Spain, a place where most people in the hospitality industry speak English, so not much problem with this. Besides they receive countless visitors from both the USA and the UK, being Spain one of the favorite destinations in these countries.

In addition, learning a few basic Spanish phrases will surely help too and it's not that hard

They speak super fast! I think it helps to know some common phrases and also have a dictionary handy - otherwise you may have a lot of trouble just getting around. A lot of people speak English, but have heavy accents, so that takes a bit of getting used to.

English and Spanish are the two most spoken languages in the world. If you can speak Spanish, even a small amount it will be appreciated by any Spanish you speak to. At least you are making the effort. That said, most places you visit, if they are frequented by tourists they will know enough English to be able to understand you. The British have for 30+ years provided the majority of tourists to Spain and it is the first "second" language they learn.

As the brit mentioned, is very likely most of the spaniard people you meet during your trip took english when they were going to school, but I'd not count on them being really fluent. Most of the spaniards I know have a really lousy english, so I'd have that in mind before going there. Knowing some spanish words can always be helpful! So if you can learn a couple spanish phrases... that would be great
