    Language Translation in Spain?

I took Spanish classes in school and got decently fluent where I could hold conversations with classmates and the teacher. Though, when I'm in public and hear Spanish people speak I can only pick up some of the content. How do you go about translating? If I go to Spain I'll try talking slowly and asking people to talk slow, but I think I'll use my phone for translation.

I don't really see how your phone could translate well. Maybe limit your conversations with people. You shouldn't be needing to carry on full conversations with people.

Is It Must To Learn Spanish For A Tourist In Spain

It definitely helps to know a few phrases but I don't think that you will need to carry out full conversations with strangers. You may need some basic Spanish to ask for directions, to buy bus and train tickets and to order food. I can't think of any reason to be necessarily good at Spanish, as a visitor your communication goals may not need to be technically precise!

Speaking to fellow students or teachers in a foreign language is always a whole different ball game to talking to the locals in their own language. Different areas have different dialects just as in the UK. Imagine a Spanish student of english trying to understand what a geordie is saying to him. The most important thing is to learn some everyday common phrases and questions that most would understand. If you have an ipad or phone and need to ask a specific question you can use Google Translate and just show it to the person you are speaking with. They may even reply by typing their answer into Google for you.

The reason you might not be picking all the words you hear must be because the spaniard accent is very hard to understand, specially if the spanish used by your teacher was of a more neutral nature. If I were you I'd try to get an audio course that teaches you to pronounce a few phrases the same way spaniards do. I'm a native spanish speaker, btw, and sometimes I've such a hard time understanding what the spaniards say! I come from a country where people speaks a more neutral spanish that is super easy to understand for most foreigners!

I'm sure you'll pick it up quick. I had a very similar situation when I first went to Spain, I knew the languague to a rudimentary level, but the locals would speak real fast and with some very thick accents. Good thing was after 3 - 4 days, I could understand 90% of the conversations, and I felt a lot more comfortable speaking. It will come naturally if you keep an open mind.
