    Most Visited Cities In Spain

Does some body know which cities in Spain are most popular among tourists and what are the attractions in that cities which make them so popular and attractive among tourists. Also tell that what else is there to see in Spain beside its beaches.

One of my friend told me that Spain has got hot weather so its only advisable to go there after August ?

Madrid; Capital city, lots of history, palaces and monuments, world class museums like the Prado, exciting nightlife

Barcelona; Sagrada Familia, Ramblas, lots of culture, architecture and art, nightlife

Granada; The Alhambra, beautiful architecture, moorish history, tapas and food.

Seville; The Alcazar, the Giralda, the Cathedral, flamenco music, good food, the Plaza de España, Andalusian architecture.

Santiago de Compostela; The Cathedral which is the end of the Way of St. James, architecture, lots of religious museums and crusades related history.

Cordoba; The Mezquita, Medina Azahara, old Jewish quarter. Lots of moorish, roman, etc, history and architecture.

There are many others; Malaga is has a beautiful but manageably small old center with roman and moorish ruins, great food and people. Toledo is a gorgeous walled medieval city which used to be the capital of Spain and where the famous Toledo steel and damascene come from. Bilbao is an old industrial city that has reinvented itself as a world class modern one, with the Guggenheim at its heart. Central and Northern Spain as a whole gets overlooked but is steeped history (and prehistory) and also has beautiful countryside and food.

It can get very hot in summer in Spain, July-August mainly, but there are also reasons to visit. For example Málaga is at it's hottest in August, but that's also when the Feria is, which is basically a week long party in the streets and the local fairgrounds, lots of music and fun. Think Carnaval. If you do go in summer, it's best to stick to coastal cities which will be a bit cooler, going inland will be a significant temperature change.

But another great time to visit many of the souther cities is during Easter, since that is when the processions happen, and those are gorgeous. Generally looking up the festivals for your dates of travel is a good idea anyway since there are several big ones that might be fun, or might affect the prices in the city you are visiting, for example the Fallas or San Fermin.

There's also a lot of nature and outdoors activity if you like that. The Coto Doñana, Sierra Nevada, Picos de Europa. And if you're into soccer (or bicycling, or motogp, or other stuff I'm sure) obviously that's really big in Spain.

So basically, it's a big country with a lot of stuff, so it's probably easier to start with what you like and use that to narrow your focus a bit.

I would also add that Alicante is a great place to visit. It is right on the east coast of Spain, and my undertanding is that it is as close to paradise as you can get.

I minored in Spanish and I studied in Mexico, only because I am from the States and it was much cheaper to study in Mexico than it was to do so in Spain. But we are planning for our next major vacation to be Spain, and you can bet Alicante is on the list.

In your case though, I recommend having a home base, so to speak, and planning little day trips to some/all of the places zlemune mentioned above. You'll never see it all, and it is important to not be in a hurry.

And yes, August would be the worst time to go. Everything is closed and it is really, really hot. We are thinking about coinciding our trip with the next World Cup, so that we can watch some matches in a few Tapas bars. OK now you really have me looking to move this vacation thing forward...

I would like to thank zlemune for that very long and informative post. Spain sounds like a great place to visit. It appears as if there's so much to see and do there. I knew about Madrid, Barcelona, Cardoba and Seville; but zlemune mentioned some cities and towns which I've never even heard of. I love the Spanish cuisine, and I would love to learn more about it's culture and history. I already know how to communicate in the language so I most definitely have to travel there as soon as I get the opportunity to.

Glad to help. And I agree with Hari's suggestion of a homebase for a longer trip, that's especially handy if you choose a city with an airport and take side trips by car, bus, or rail.

Valencia is nice to visit. It is clean with large streets and very good weather. I love to visit Valencia during Las Fallas. the traditional celebrations around Easter. They have colorful parades and people make large papier mache statues filled with fireworks that they burn and light up at the end of the festival.

I also love Barcelona and Tarragona. They're great cities to visit!

Which part of the country are you interested in? I would say that if you are going to visit a big city, than you have to spend at least 2-3-4 days there. So choose a big city (Barcelona, Valencia, etc.) and spend time exploring it. If you are interested in a specific region, that is another thing. Than choose a little city, rent a car or something, and explore the region step by step.

This is located in central Spain, Salamanca owes its breathtaking beauty to the nearby sandstone from which many of the city’s buildings were constructed. There are beautiful lights that emanate from the stone at sunset has earned Salamanca the nickname “The Golden City. This city is really beautiful in Spain.
