The floating market- Do the things float for real ?

There is this market situated on the Damneon Saduak Canal which is called as the floating market. I want to know why the market is called as its name suggests and what products are sold in the market. Why is it such a big attraction for tourists?

Well... there are lots of boats from which the sellers work. It's really an amazing sight and so tourists flock to see it. For example here is a picture.

The colors and bustle is really quite attractive and the prices aren't too bad either.

It's called the floating market because merchants sell their products from small boats that look like canoes. There are actually a number of floating markets all over Thailand and 3 located in Bangkok. Damnoen Saduak, while interesting, has become crowded by tourists flocking from Khao San Road. Personally, I would look into one of the other markets, if you don't mind waking up a little earlier. Here are some of the others in/around Bangkok:

Another fun thing to do is hire a longtail boat to give you a personal tour of the canals. You can see the way people live on the river. In Bangkok, the "slums" are located right on the canals.
