Well, that's a nice post, but it still wouldn't entice me to Turkey in a million years. I have never wanted to visit, and I never will. I have heard many bad things from people who I know that have gone there on holiday, mostly about female tourists being 'harassed' by local men. It's not something I want to experience!

I am sure there are wonderful places and things to do in Turkey. I have always considered Istanbul as one of the places I would like to see before I die. I guess whenever you go to foreign places, you need to read up about it and be aware of the things that are happening around you so that you don't end up having a bad experience. I am sure that there are tour guides around to help you out and at the same time make your holiday more of a pleasurable experience. It is to their advantage to make sure that you enjoy your trip after all.

I am not sure if I would class Turkey as a dream destination. It's just I have been to a number of places in Turkey and some of them do have stunning things to see, but other parts of Turkey just don't do it for me at all.

Re: Why Is Turkey a Dream Destination for Tourists

Last summer I stayed in Turkey for two months and absolutely LOVED it. I spent my time between Istanbul and small fishing villages on the Black Sea and then Bodrum (heaven in a village) on the Mediterranean. What I loved the most was the people and culture. My favorite times were in small fishing villages where hardly anyone spoke English, roads were largely unpaved, and dinner was what you caught in the ocean earlier that day. Not to mention that the beaches were absolutely pristine. I've been to Puerto Rico dozens of times for vacation, but the clear water and soft sand of the Black Sea gave PR a run for their money. Furthermore, one forgets that Turkey was a part of the Roman Empire. Thus, there are Roman ruins EVERYWHERE. Driving down the highway you will see colosseums built into the hillside, or on the beach there are ancient greek plaques and pieces of marble statues (the still standing ones) everywhere. Seeing ancient artifacts up close was a treat I was not prepared for.

I very much want to go to Turkey. I've read that it has it's good and it's bad just like any other country but it's beautiful from the pictures I have seen. I also have heard they have a really cheap medical procedures over there, so I wouldn't mind going to do a little medical tourism myself.

I would also want to go to Turkey someday and see all the amazing sights and places that are just full of history and culture.
Does anyone have any other places that are less known but are hidden gems in Turkey?

Was just in Istanbul. Truly breathtaking. I dont think any city embodies better the definition of the mixing of cultures than Istanbul. You have cosmopolitan European influence mixing with traditional arabic culture and lifestyle. You will see people walking on the street that look very very different from one another, but they are Turkish! Turkish people are extremely nice and the food is to die for!

Re: Why Is Turkey a Dream Destination for Tourists

My bioyfriend just came back from a holiday trip to Turkey, unfortunately I couldn't go with him! He said he loved the place and had such a great time! I think he paid a good price for a 2 week holiday over there, it costed him and his friend around 1,800 euros. He did tell me that turkish men are kinda odd, like the macho type! Fortunately he had no trouble with the guys there, but I'm not sure what it'd have been like for me if I had had the chance to go with him. He had a lot fun, I think turkey is a great place to visit if you're a guy... even if you go alone! I'd not recommend it to a group of girls tho.

I have heard a slightly different experience regarding the food in Turkey. A family I know went there earlier this summer. 2 out of the 3 kids spent the better part of the vacation at a hospital due to food poisoning. Turkey is starting to grow as a cheaper alternative to popular tourist destinations but for the moment I prefer to spend a bit more and go to other destinations.

Except for the fact that Turkey would be the perfect place for the travelling historian, I don't think there's much that's beautiful, in terms of scenery, in Turkey. In addition to that the Turkish culture is totally different. It's a European country yes but. . . it's a Muslim country and quite naturally you wouldn't know when you'll annoy the Turks.

Turkey therefore is not a 'dream destination' for many people.

Re: Why Is Turkey a Dream Destination for Tourists

I visited Turkey with a male friend a few years ago and was a fantastic place to be in, we travelled to Istanbul and paid a visit to the Blue Mosque which is a stunning building and fantastic at sunset, we stood on the Bosphorus Bridge and took pics of ourselves standing on the border with Europe and Asia.

I had a unique haircut and shave in the barbers and it was a fantastic experience and then we travelled to the Grand Bazaar and had great fun bartering with the locals who are really friendly people and are curious in how far you have travelled and what you think of their country, they also have an amazing passion for football.

The architecture in Turkey is fantastic, especially if you love history or admire buildings and lovely photography opportunities. I personally would take the chance to visit Turkey, even if you go once just to experience it, it is a gem of a place.

I have heard Turkey is wonderful. I have been to Greece, and I would really like to see Turkey. As for getting harassed by local men...you can get that ANYWHERE.

I visited this amazing country like two years ago and I was really impressed by its beauty, its rich culture and food and all other things. I would recommend anyone to visit it, because it's an amazing experience to meet those friendly people and enjoy their company, to visit historical monuments and enjoy the beautiful views.

Re: Why Is Turkey a Dream Destination for Tourists

Sadly enough, in 2015 Turkey is far from being a tourist paradise.
I think it's highly risky now to seek peace and safety and relaxation on your holiday in Turkey. I was there 3 years ago and I witnessed local demonstrations in Istanbul and it was far from being safe environment. Still according to 2012 MasterCard Global destinations Cities Index Istanbul was the fastest growing tourism market.
Now, after Obama has demanded that Erdogan must prevent IS terrorists from easily penetrating Turkey at last, I see things even more pessimistically. Those IS butchers cut throats even of Muslims and Europeans for them are just sheep. Dig into it just. All this time we've been facing deadly risks in that so called paradise of Turkey!
This Xmas I plan to stay here in Germany, the safest place on the planet.

According to my aunt turkey has many attractions but she is like Aspendos. I heard some information about this name. Aspendus was an ancient Greco-Roman city in Antalya province of Turkey. It is located 7 kilometres northeast of central Serik. This city is famous in its structures. Now I have an idea to go ther after my New york bus tours.

Istanbul there aren't enough words to describe how lovely this city is. There is something truly moving about being in such a religious city with architecture that dates back for centuries that's why turkey is a dream destination for tourists.
