    Turkish bath or Hammam

Has anyone visited Turkey and gone to a Turkish bath? I hear they are good for your health.

Re: Turkish bath details and criteria

The experience in a Turkish bath would be outstanding. There are three types of services available for everybody in a Turkish bath. Each has a different procedure which you go through and different rates. Though Turkish baths are similar to sauna but in a way or two they are very different from ordinary baths. They are a must visit.

There are also great baths in Budapest. It is a really luxurious experience. I think you will like it. In Turkey you can also get spa treatments at the baths if you want them. It is definitely worth a try if you are there

My best friend is Turkish and she said that in her father's village everyone goes to the hammam (different days for men and women - if there is only one hammam in the village or else separate ones in separate buildings) to bathe, chat and relax, kind of like a traditional village spa. She also says everyone goes in strips and bathes totally naked (of course men and women are separated) and it is kind of weird when your neighbor's veiled grandma suddenly strips naked and sits next to you in the bath to chat on how your family is doing!

Best to go with a local person who knows the ropes - can be a bit daunting otherwise but well worth it, as are the baths / hamman all the way from Morocco to Iran.

    Re: Turkish bath or Hammam

I've not yet to experience one of these but from what my friends have said (who have been to Turkey) they've said it is a unique experience and a must do if you are there. My friend can recall being in a steam room with various temperatures and 10 mins later being scrubbed with a mitt that took a lot of dead skin off him whilst covered in alot of suds. He then remembered having a message Turkish style afterwards which was alot different to the Swedish ones he's used to. However he did say his tan lasted a lot longer than he expected after he came back but it is something I would love to try for myself.
