White House Tours Not Possible Now

Unfortunately not. You can only view the White House from a distance. There used to be White House tours but they have been cancelled since this year due to staffing reduction. These tours might be reinstated again but for now, there are no tours available.

I just returned from DC. We took pictures outside the gate at the White House but the tours were stopped. There are many other attractions to visit in DC though. I highly recommend the natural history museum and the American history museum. All the smithsonite museums and the zoo have free admission.

I don't think you can. I went on a trip with my school a few years ago and luckily a boy in my group's sister was interning there so we got a special tour. Unless you have special access you can't go everywhere. But there are some great places to go like the Lincoln Memorial, museums and you have to check out the Newseum.

The other posters are correct, the tours are stopped for now. But there is so much to see and do in DC! The Smithsonian museums are amazing (and free). I wander for hours and I've been to each a dozen times. The holocaust museum is also an important place to visit, really well curated. Of course, there's always the mall, reflecting pool and monuments. Don't forget the food! DC is home to some amazing bars and restaurants. Don't let the lack of tours stop you from visiting!

    Re: Visiting the White house

I visited the white house about 2 years ago and unfortunately I could only get a view of it from behind a thick iron fence. It is a really cool site, but I had way more fun visiting all of the museums and the washington monument. I highly suggest you take a about 2 days out of your trip to visit all of the museums. You could easily spend a whole day in the smithsonian and not even see half of the museum.

As everyone else said, it really is a shame that the White House tours were discontinued.
I hope they allow tours in the White House again in the near future. :\

I had the chance to see the white house from outside. Sadly I never had the chance to go on one of those tours if they ever decide to reinstall those tours I would surely want to go.

That's such a shame, hopefully they'll be reinstated by the time I go next year
I'm hoping to visit the monuments and Smithsonian as well. Is it possible to visit each of these places in a day or is more time required?, as I don't really want to rush my time at the Smithsonian as Im a bit of a history geek.

Tours are unfortunately not possible at this time. I believe they were stopped due to security reasons. I have never been but would love to go just once.

There is NO possible way you can do all these museums in a single day (unless, hopefully, you meant one day per museum)and see much of anything. We went last year (my then 9-year-old son and I) and I planned for about a week in DC (we spent another week down toward the Richmond area so we could drive to Williamsburg, Jamestown, and a Civil War reenactment) and still had to "rush" through most everything. I would say you need to plan at least half-a-day for each museum, but a full day for ones you're really interested in.

To give you an idea of how long it took us, I had planned one day for The American History Museum and The Natural History Museum. I figured we'd do American History before lunch and Natural History after lunch. Well, we got to American History before it opened and were waiting outside for it to open, along with other people, so we were there as early as possible. By the time I realized it was lunch time, I realized we had only covered ONE FLOOR of the museum - and had two more to go!! I felt American History was more important, so we ended up spending extra time there. I think we went to the Natural History Museum at about 2 or 3PM and rushed through everything, and still skipped big sections of it. You also have to figure that an adult wanting to see and read most of the things they have to offer is going to take a lot longer than going through with a 9-year-old who might skip some of the things he deems "boring."

It really is an awesome place to go. Hopefully you're going when the weather is decent, because some things - like the FDR memorial - just need the beauty of good weather to fully enjoy and appreciate them. Have fun!

I am sad that they have stopped doing the tours...maybe someday they will open it up again. It is amazing what a poor economy can do. The White House tour is like the main "to do" thing when you visit DC.

White House tours were discontinued so you can't visit the White House. I also want to visit there, but unfortunately it is not possible. When the visit of the White House will start again, then I would to to visit over there.

For some security reasons they have cancelled all the tour in White house, may be after some time they will resume it again.

USA attractions are the most famous from all over the world. These are the names of some most fabulous attractions of USA, Grand canyon, Yellow stone national park, Niagara falls and white House. White House is the official residency in Washington, D.C. which is located in United state of America. I personally visit there. House is gloom by the lights as like star on the earth.
