Common Taxi Etiqutte in New York

I've always wondered about common taxi etiquette.
Does anyone know, for example, any fast ways to flag down a taxi or spots where taxi are always vacant?
Anyway, what are the common taxi tips and tricks you know and what are the common taxi etiquette as well in New York?

It depends on the street, or the avenue, the time, or the day of the week. During Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night in general is awful to try to catch a cab. You are better off with the subway. But any other days, it is really no problem getting a cab anywhere in Manhattan. Just stand by the curb or if there is not too much traffic, you can stand closer to the middle of the street, and just raise your arms high. If you can whistle, even better ;-D

In the outer boroughs, yellow cabs maybe a little hard to come by, but the livery cabs are plentiful, but just be cautious, especially if it is very, very late. It is better to try to get a number of a livery cab company and have one of their cars pick you up.

For short distances in yellow cabs, I usually round it off to the next dollar, or just add another dollar extra. Late night cab rides I am always generous. If driver is nice, I try to give $3 extra. For longer distances, I would give $5.

I lived in Brooklyn for a year and the most common taxis are the bootleg or pirate taxis that aren't like the yellow cabs you see in Manhattan. If you stand on any corner, you can just put your hand up and they will usually stop. That being said, I've been in Manhattan and had a hard time getting a taxi if I am not going the distance that they want, or if they don't want to go to Brooklyn. And I have to say that it is pretty frustrating when you are trying to get home late at night. I recommend googling the name of a cab company in your area, like "cab Chelsea" and then calling and seeing what the rate is; build up a profile with that company and they will usually come get you from anywhere. Good luck!

Thanks for the massive information sharing. It seems you had great knowledge about transportation of NY. Your sharing info would be really worthwhile among tourists as well as for me.
