Hiking the Grand Canyon with Kids

It has always been a dream of mine to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and stay at Phantom Ranch. I have always wondered what age is recommended for children to hike the canyon. I know it can be very dangerous if you aren't prepared. Has anyone done this with kids? And what age would you recommend for a minimum? Thanks in advance!

    Grand Canyon Hiking With Kids

Although i do not have a definite answer to the question about age of the kids but you must first go to the parks and trails nearby to increase walking and stamina before going to this Grand Canyon hiking expedition.

this sounds like it would be a real adventure for the whole family. I don't know as far as what age would be good to take the kids hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, but I have known some people who have taken their kids when they were around 9 or 10 years old.

Hiking to the bottom can be a serious undertaking and you really need to plan ahead. It gets extremely hot there. There are a lot of shorter hikes that offer amazing scenery and several tours that allow you to ride the trails and pathways on horses and mules. This website has some good information for planning to hike on a visit to the Grand Canyon. Day Hiking - Grand Canyon National Park

How old are your kids? I've led quite a few trips into the Grand Canyon, as well as done a solo hike. The route I'd recommend is go down to Phantom Ranch on the Kaibab Trail, and return to the rim on the Bright Angel Trail. The way down to Phantom Ranch is fairly steep; however, it can be done in a half-day. I've led youth as young as 14 down and they had no problem whatsoever; my best guess would be that taking a kid under 10 might be a challenge, and even with a 10 year old you'd probably want to carry most of their gear.

The biggest problem that you're likely to encounter (other than the heat if you go in the summer, which I wouldn't recommend), is blister and sore toes. Find a pair of cross-trainers or hiking boots and do quite a few hikes in them beforehand that include a lot of up and down; you want to know FOR SURE that you are going to have happy feet when you get to the bottom, because if not, the way up won't be very fun.

All that being said, I think a trip to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back with your family is totally doable, and above all, very worthwhile. It will be a memory you'll never forget.

I don't think hiking on Grand Canyon with kids is a good idea, there are so many scorpions and rattlesnakes.

Yeah i agreed with Vaughan...!! Grand canyon is a nice place that offers incredible and mesmerizing views of nature. It is an ideal one destination among adventure lovers or for backpackers. But it would be a nice place for kids as they always wanna do something entertaining. So may they easily get bored there.

According to my opinion, Grand Canyon is a promising destination due to its natural beauty. The Canyon is a natural formation of red rocks and offers plenty of majestic views of nature which fascinates me towards it. I have visited there about six months ago and spent there awesome time while enjoying some adventures activities.
