    Best "indie" scenes

I'm obsessed with little vintage stores where you can buy a fabulous cocktail ring for a pittance and hole-in-the-wall record stores with a bunch of independent artists' music stocked (or, even better, vinyl records!). Obviously, nothing will live up to my hipster dreams, but I'm sure stores like this exist (although they're probably more expensive and less clean than I would like). Where are good neighborhoods in the States where one can find some of these wonderful places? In New York, Chicago, San Francisco? Enlighten me!

Not sure about specific neighborhoods, but in terms of the best "indie" cities, I'd have to go with...

    Austin, TX (huge music/film scene)

Portland, OR (quintessential "hipster" city... coffee shops, records stores, independent bands/labels, vegen/natural everything, etc)

Parts of San Francisco and New York, but you'll have to google for specific areas.

My friend owns a used record store in Ventura County, CA. I don't know full cities like that, outside of some college or mountain towns. I always stumble into my vintage/indie stores. This may sound weird, but try watching the History Channel. They have shows like "American Pickers" that showcase people traveling across the country and finding amazing and historic relics. It may be good for idea getting. Also - garage sales are the best. People have the most random things there.
