What to do in New York City

New York City is a popular tourist city for US and non US residents. I used to go a couple times a week because it was just something to do and I was close enough at the time to go, but I haven't really been there much in years. There are so many things to do and everybody enjoys something different so I am asking everybody what they like to do or would like to do in New York City.

For me (because I wasn't really a tourist going that often) I just enjoyed going there to get the best pizza one can get, walk around and shop (even if just window shopping) and there are many cool shows to see. I just liked the excitement and the fact that there are stores there that you will never find anywhere else - from little stores to big stores.

But now to recommend things for tourists to see would be (now of course everybody likes something different):

Rockefeller Center for the lighting of the tree is nice - usually around Thanksgiving

If you are there around Thanksgiving, the Macy's Parade is really nice and that is on Thanksgiving Day

Getting pizza because NYC has the best pizza - seriously it does!

Shopping in any of the cool shops - there are so many little and small that I cannot even mention, they are everywhere

Dallas BBQ is a good place to eat if you like BBQ food and you see a Dallas BBQ

If you have children (and probably even if you don't) you have to visit FAO Schwarz - one of the coolest and biggest toy stores you will see

There is so much to do and I know others can list other very cool things too so if you have a great thing to do or visit in NYC, please share below If you would like to visit something in NYC and would like to ask us about it, just ask and we will do our best to answer!

Must Go Places For Tourists in NYC

I used to go to New York City to see my step brother when he lived there, and I am so sad that I never went there around the appropriate time to see the Macy's Day Parade! It is so beautiful from just a television screen, that I can't imagine how beautiful it is in real life. At the time we were visiting there, the twin towers were still up so we went to see those a lot. We also went to the Statue of Liberty, but it was closed down for some reason most of the time(s) we went, so it was hard to go and actually get the whole feel of it. I can't wait to visit there again soon, what a beautiful city and state!

You've mentioned some really cool things that I never knew about, and now my daydreams about going to NYC are even more elaborate! Add that to the list of the more obvious things like Broadway, Time Square, Central Park etc...I just wish I had enough money to go and do all these amazing things right now!

Re: What to do in New York City

A friend and I traveled to New York City by train, spent 5 days and had the time of our lives! We traveled the city mostly on foot so that we could get the feel of the city, met people, hear the sounds, smell all the different smells and stop and look at things when we wanted to. There is so much to do there that we wished we had 2 weeks.

Some of my favorite places include- Radio City Music Hall, the tour is excellent and it is a great place to see a show. Belvedere Castle has the best view of Central park and is a neat little castle in it's own right. The Hershey Chocolate Store smells wonderful and has an electronic sign that you can post messages on. South Street Port has some cool shops like Futon Fish Market and Every Purple plus a couple of cool museums. The MET and the Musuem of Natural History are must sees. Finally make time to take a ride on the historic Friedsam Carousel it is a step back in time and totally worth it.

If you are looking for a unique dinning experience try out Jekel & Hyde's Club Restaurant and Bar. The staff are in costume and the place in completely interactive. Though it may not be for the faint of heart. Another cool place to eat is this great desert shop in Little Italy call Lo Suntino's Desserts of Distinction. It is a cute little place with friendly staff and fabulous desserts.

If you are thinking about visiting NY first I recommend getting a travel book ahead of time and selecting your must see attractions and then leaving the rest to your mood and whim that day. Second, get a New York pass. You can buy them for 1, 2,3 or 7 days. It is totally worth it as the pass covers at least 80 popular attractions saving you money. The more places you visit the more you save plus you get to skip the line at some places, a great way to be able to see more in a short amount of time.

Don't forget riding the Staten Island ferry (for free) for a great view of Lady Liberty. And the South St. Seaport has changed a lot, I'm afraid... the Fulton Fish Market moved, and the Seaport was damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

Thing To Do In New York City For Tourists

I was just in NYC in May. We stayed at my stepsister's apartment in the Upperwest Side. It is right across the street from Central Park. My stepsister was out of town for the weekend so we took care of her furbaby - Shy. It was our 2nd time in NYC and this time we were on our own. The first time we went with a tour group. Our main purpose for visiting was to go and watch a soccer game at the Yankee Stadium. While watching the game, a local sat down beside me and gave me some amazing tips on what to see and do while we were in NYC. We managed to figure out the metro system - well sort of! It was intimidating at first but once we got the hang of it, it was an amazing way to travel . We walked and walked and walked some more. My favorite part was stumbling upon a street fair. Lots of food and crafts for sale. The vibe was amazing. We ate pizza at two different places - both were excellent. The prices weren't too bad either. I would love to go back asap to take in a few shows and to explore the city some more. I think it's a place I could get used to!

Re: What to do in New York City

I was lucky enough to travel to New York at the age of 10. My mom took my grandma and I on a bus tour because she doesn't like to drive or fly. We rode on a coach bus filled with lots of nice old people for several days and got to travel through several different states to get there. That was the summer right before 9/11, so I was able to see the Twin Towers. Being ten, I have some vivid memories, but some of them have become a bit blurry.

I would recommend seeing a Broadway show when you are there. I got to see the musicals 42nd Street and Beauty and the Beast on Broadway. I was in awe the whole show and teared up when it was over. My mom and I also awoke at 5 a.m. to get in a taxi and go stand by the outside gates of where they film Good Morning America. We were right up in the front and could be seen when they scanned the crowd outside a few times!

We also traveled to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. I have family that traveled through Ellis Island, which blew my mind as a ten year old. The Statue of Liberty was also great to see, and back in that day you could take the steps all the way up to the torch (although we only went as far as her crown).

My mom took us on a hoarse and carriage ride through the city, and I would love to go back and take my husband (whom has never been to NYC) on one because I think it would be very romantic. Our carriage driver was very nice and he pointed out all different places of interest and landmarks.

I told my husband that one year we need to go to the New Years Eve celebration in New York. We always watch it on TV, but I need to go in person someday! I think it would be a magical way to rock in the New Year and I would love to be in the big crowds!

Having a picnic in Central Park is also another cool thing to do. Plenty of open space and the opportunity to meet new people. Also, during the summer there are concerts held in Central Park.

Yes, I agree New York has some of the best pizza shops in the U.S. But, have you tried Junior's World Famous Cheesecake at Junior's world Famous Cheesecake Factory in Brooklyn? It's to die for . In general, I love to dine in New York. There are so many types of cuisines to appeal to any palate.

I love Times Square, and I love to window shop at Fifth Avenue. But I noticed that the fashion deals though can be found in Brooklyn. You get some of the same high end pieces there at a much better price compared to if you shopped uptown in Manhattan.

I love Madison Square Gardens, Central Park, Broadway--they're just so many things I love about New York.

There are also the carriage rides through central park. There is also a great little zoo that kids love. I also love the museums. There is the metropolitan art museum and the Natural history museum. These take half a day or a full day to explore they are so extensive. Another thing I enjoy, while wandering through the New York streets is St Paul's Cathedral and the New York City Library. The ground zero museum is now open. Try and catch a Broadway show. Those are so amazing. I have never attended one that I did not love. I like to catch a Yankees game, if I am there while they are playing. Great place to visit and endless things to see!

Interesting Things That Can Be Done In NYC

When I'm in NYC I love walking along the High Line. It's a "linear park" along the West Side that has great views, interesting plants, people-watching and more. Sometimes there is live music and there are nice gourmet treats along the park, as well as great restaurants and shopping in the surrounding area. It's above street level but below rooftop level so it's a unique new vantage point from which to see the city.

I also enjoy visiting Zabar's, a gourmet food market on the Upper West Side, to grab a sandwich and some snacks before walking to Central Park to lounge and eat.

I've been to NYC several times. It has been a few years since I've been there and I'm itching to go back for a visit. The last time I went I spent a fair amount of time in Brooklyn and highly recommend getting out of Manhattan and heading over there if you find yourself in NYC. One of my favorite places in Brooklyn is the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. The flowers and trees are amazing and their gardens contain beautiful and diverse species of flowering plants. Additionally, while in Brooklyn I recommend taking a walking tour of Brooklyn Heights if you enjoy architecture and historic brownstones. Finally, after all that walking, head on over to Williamsburg and visit Brooklyn Brewery for a beer and some amusing people watching as you'll be in Williamsburg, which has been historically been the height of NYC's music, art and 'hipster' scene.

Whenever I go to NYC I make sure I eat dinner one night at Ellen's Stardust Diner. It has the best traditional American food (think chicken pot pie, meatloaf, macaroni and cheese) and the entertainment is excellent. They usually sing songs from whatever plays are popular at the time. Honestly if you can't get to a show on Broadway this will fill the need perfectly for live entertainment!

I'm from Boston, so NYC is just a short and super cheap bus ride away for me. It loses it's luster after a while, but the one thing that never gets old to me is waling around in Central Park with some friends, or even just sitting and enjoying the outdoors. If you're looking to get away from all the big buildings and bright lights, it's definitely worth spending a few hours or even a whole day in.
