The most horrible accidents experience you have while traveling

Accidents happens and horrible things happens so what is your worst story. Tell us here. I forgot my entire wallet in my car once and I was going to CA from Vegas and luckily they gave us food and that we went back home the same day. I didn't have to worry that much and it was safe in my car but I travel without money and an ID. They almost didn't let me in to work. I was traveling to work out of town. I travel once and my rented car broke down. It was a horrible experiences but car breaks down all the time. What is your nightmare stories so we can learn from them and maybe try to avoid them. Please tell us here.

This isn't in the US, and they don't exactly qualify as "accidents," but I've had quite a few horror travel stories. My top 3 favorite:

    - Did volunteer work in Haiti for a month. On the last day when we were supposed to fly back home, a hurricane hit the country, and our flights were all cancelled for a week or more (we literally found this out at the airport, and had to make the 4 hour journey by car back to our house.) Had to stay in a house with open holes in the walls for windows while the storm raged outside and inside and flooded the lower parts of our house. One thing I'll never forget was driving back from the airport to the town I was staying in: normally loud and raucous at all hours of the day/night, with music playing, cars honking etc. When we got back, it was DEAD silent.

    - A taxi driver tried to kidnap me in his taxi and force me to pay the equivalent of $100 to let me out of his car (after he pulled over on the side of the highway in the middle of nowhere in Shenzhen). I kicked the doors and screamed at him but he kept demanding money. Finally, I just started punching him in the face until he opened the doors. That was the first, and only time I've ever punched someone in the face. Pretty sure he deserved it though.

    - I rented motorbikes with a friend in Pai, Thailand, and rode around the hills outside of town for a few hours (a beautiful experience if you ever get the chance to do it). When we got back in town we parked next to a doughnut cart because my friend wanted to get a 2 baht (6 cents) doughnut. Because I'm used to riding regular bikes, I unknowingly rested my hand on the right handle bar (which on a motorcycle is the acceleration) and started accelerating into the doughnut cart. I comically hit the vat of oil and it toppled in the air and landed on my head, covering me in disgusting oil (I also bruised myself up quite a bit). I found out a few minutes later that they were just about the start cooking the oil, and if it had been a minute or two later, I would be either dead, or permanently scarred for life.

I wouldn't say this was a horrible accident. Anyway, we left for a family vacation to Florida, 14 hours away from home. On the way down there we realized that my husband forgot to bring the debit card. We had no credit cards, very little cash and were in panic mode. Thankfully, my dad was able to break into my house to get the debit card and bring it to us when they met us in Florida the next day.

I took a trip via bus from my home state of Michigan to where I was about to move, Florida. Why I chose this method instead of flying, I'm still not sure. I guess I thought I'd be saving money. I get to Florida, wait for them to get my luggage from the undercarriage of the bus, and my luggage is nowhere to be found. Apparently they never loaded it and since we had to switch buses about three times, there was no telling where it was. As I mentioned, I wasn't just traveling, I was moving. All of my possessions were in those bags. I eventually got my bags but it took about a week. Not a horrible experience but compared to my other relatively smooth travels, it was an inconvenience!
