What is the best state in US for new student?

This isn't exactly travel related but I'm thinking of going to the States for my post grads next year. I've never been out of my country so it'll be a whole new experience for me. I'm a little nervous to be honest, so I'd really like to know.. Which states should I look to while considering colleges? I'm a literature student, will be pursuing my MA/PhD. Any suggestions?

You have some options, but I'd recommend Boston, Massachusetts.

You have several options. A lot of people dream of going to New York City, the thing to remember about that is that the state of New York is huge, so unless you're actually in the city, you may not be anywhere near it. Plus if you are in the city, that's about all you're near other than New Jersey. You can travel to upstate New York, and it is beautiful there, but it will take hours, and it doesn't have much besides beautiful landscapes. Personally I find that New York gets old pretty fast.

California is another popular destination, and if you like warm sunny weather I'd definitely recommend going there, especially to Southern California. California has a lot of big cities that are worth visiting, but it's also a huge state so they're pretty spread out and will take a while to get to.

I'm from Boston (in Massachusetts) and it's always a good choice for studies because it's known as "the college town" I personally love Boston. Being right on the coast is great, plus it's close to a lot. You can go about an hour or two in one direction and visit the beaches on Cape Cod or you can go an hour or two in the other direction and be in the mountains in New Hampshire. There are several smaller but historic and interesting cities right nearby such as Salem which is famous for the witch trials. This is where I went to college, if you want the American Halloween experience go there on October 31st, otherwise avoid it like the plague during October. And if you really really want to visit New York once or twice, roundtrip bus tickets from Boston are super cheap.

The best states in my opinion would be New York, Chicago, or D.C. The job market in those states are a little better. Also, those states are known to have very prestigious Universities. Since you are a literature student and pursuing an MS/ PhD I would say that NYU in New York would be a good choice of University to attend. NYU caters to the artsy types and offers a broad range of experience.

All these cities are great but in the most expensive part of the country. For literature you may want a smaller place. Often places in the mountains or near the oceans can be very inspiring for writers. Smaller towns are also a lot less expensive to live. Try VA or NC. Both are close to DC but the cost of living would be half of what it would cost to live in DC. Both also have excellent universities that are amiable to exchange students.

Well you can take the popular tract or you can take the scenic route as it were.

Popular - Boston, NYC, and Seattle

Scenic - Georgia, North Carolina, and New Hampshire

Popular will give more things to do and see as well as better resources. Scenic is quieter and prettier, but also boring and somewhat safer - it is also rather cheaper as well. Another thing is that scenic is desperate for foreign exchange students to build prestige so you may get a very generous financial aid package.

Maine is a nice, scenic place with all the seasons. It doesn't have the draw of New York City or any other fast paced places.

Boston and NYC are common and you can find jobs and collages very affordable in these cities.
