Traveling to California - Where to Go and What to Do?

    Hello fellow tourists!

My husband and I both agree that we would like to visit California in the upcoming years. Neither of us have ever been there and we don't know where to begin planning. Should we stop in San Francisco, San Diego or LA? Where are the best places to stay that aren't crazily expensive? Any good recommendations for things we "must see"?
We both want to spend a day at the ocean, what beaches are the best?

I understand that I'm asking a pretty broad question, but we really have no idea what is all out there.

    Thank you!

I saw San Diego and LA, both are good place to visit. In LA you can visit the Hollywood studios, staple tower if you love NBA, Disneyland. In San Diego you can try the Balboa Park and USS Midway Museum. Those are some paces you can try. I don't usually stay in a 5 star hotel. For me, it is not practical cause most of the time I'm out. There are many not so expensive places you can try it depends on where you really wanted to go.

Wow, well the first thing to remember is that California is the size of a small country (Italy, for example) but there's also quite a bit of not much at all in the middle.

So, it makes a big difference how long you are there and how you are travelling. Also of course, what you like. LA does you no good if what you want is to go skiing and hiking, and Yosemite is beautiful but the wifi isn't all it could be

For example, a great way to see the size and beauty is to take the Coast Starlight from LA to SF (or even Sacramento).

But you can also do a road trip style visit to nothing but wine country and spend four or five full days on just that (don't drink and drive, obvs).

If you don't want to drive, and prefer something more urban anyway, then San Francisco, Santa Monica, Santa Barbara, San Diego, are all possibilities.

That said I personally favour San Francisco since there's tons to see and do, and a lot of stuff nearby that's easy to get to with or without a car but you have a lot of options

Try northern California. San Francisco is an amazing city. One of my favorite parks is Yosemite. The red wood forests are up north. California is amazing place to explore. If you have time take your time and see this great state.

When in California, my favorite places are LA, San Diego and San Francisco. San Diego has the zoo, the wildlife park and beaches. My favorite beach is La Jolla, and if you are lucky you will see baby seals on the beach, the town is lovely. There is a lot to see and do in LA and not a too bad drive to disneyland. It really depends on what you like and what you like to do, pretty much everything from shopping to surfing to people watching in California.

San Diego has it all. The zoo, a open lay out safari park, Seaworld, the Hotel Del Coronado ("Some like it hot" was shot there), the military and pier museums and exhibits, the Scripps Aquarium and over 5 tribal Casinos. If you stay in the suburbs (since there is so much to see) rooms are quite inexpensive (meaning go inland about 15 minutes) or even the casinos offer reasonable rates.

I agree with the San Diego, Anaheim area. So much to do. The zoo, aquarium, lego land,Disneyland, etc. if you still want to visit LA you could drive there from San Diego.

If you're looking for something more low-key, I'd recommend Northern California. People often forget that there are hundreds of miles North of San Francisco. Fly to SF and head North up the 101. Check out wine country along the way and once you hit Mendocino county the trees begin to get really big. Humboldt County is a fun place to check out with plenty to hiking spots between there and the Oregon Border. I recommend Prairie Creek Redwoods and Stoud Grove. It was around there that Return of the Jedi was filmed. The Smith River is one of the cleanest rivers in the world and is near the Redwoods and the Ocean. Absolutely beautiful area!

Several people mentioned San Diego. And I have to vote for that too! Best zoo ever! Though seriously expensive ($40 per person). I also want to point out if you *do* want to go to LEGOLAND you need a child with you, they don't let adults visit by themselves (which quite honestly I think is absurd).

San Francisco is also fantastic and really beautiful. San Diego is a bit closer to LA though, which has a lot of sight seeing places so it might be a more convenient location.

$40!! For that price they had better let me take one of the animals home with me at the end!

I know, it's really absurdly expensive, and we wouldn't have gone if we'd looked at the price first. It *is*a really good zoo, in that it's huge and it has every kind of animal pretty much, including pygmy hippos which are my favorite and aren't in many zoos. But that being said, it's a lot of walking around, and it felt like in some spots the animals were pretty far apart. So in some ways it's one of the best zoos I've ever been too (it's also really, really pretty, with beautiful walks) and in some ways I actually prefer slightly smaller zoos.

That was funny. A big plus to the San Diego Zoo or San Diego in general, is the Zoo is located within Balboa Park which has so many things to do that don't cost a dime. There are often art exhibitions, street entertainers, the Organ Pavillion (outdoor giant pipe organ), concerts, sporting areas (vollyball, etc) gardens, walking paths, the rose garden and native plant gardens. There are also shops and restaurants and museums (the space museum is very popular) and others including natural history and automotive. It is the whole package there and if you search Balboa park you will see! I don't think you will get to keep an animal though.

Re: Traveling to California - Where to Go and What to Do?

I have lived in California my entire life. There is a lot to see and do here. What you should plan to see will depend a lot on how much time you are taking to explore. You can easily do a trip that includes both San Diego and Los Angeles. They are only about two-three hours apart. There is all kinds of things to do in those two cities. There is the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, other museums, sports and beaches in San Diego. In Los Angeles, Disneyland is very close, Hollywood, museums, beaches and sports teams. If you chose San Francisco(which is about an 8 hour drive from Los Angeles), there is the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, museums and sports teams. You can hit a beach in San Francisco, but no matter what time of year it will be pretty chilly. Hope that helps.

As for expenses, all state of California is a bit expensive. I lived in northern Cali and it was pretty expensive. That being said, it is a country that is worth visiting!!
I would recommend San Francisco for sure, the Monterey bay, Yosemite, LA, Santa Barbara and San Diego. There are also a few smaller cities that are cute and fun, but as you are just visiting I believe sticking to larger cities is more useful! But for sure go to LA, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it!

I like Los Angeles because there's a Disneyland, which is one of my favorite places to go. Also, you can go to San Diego, which there's the Seaworld, Zoo, and the wild-animal Zoo. If you want to stay in San Francisco, check out the Golden Gate bridge and Palm Springs.
