    Christmas Destinations?

What would be your recommendations for someone looking for a Christmas/New Years' destination in the United States? Which cities have fun goings-on around the holidays? Would you go somewhere warm or somewhere that "feels" more like Christmas with wintery weather?

Where in US should one celebrate Christmas?

Are you looking for a place where you can find christmas trees, highly decorative streets and houses covered in lights. The right place is USA. It is one of those countries where the event is celebrated in such a manner that you would never think of celebrating it in any other country. If you're looking for a place in US then i would suggest you to go to New York or Chicago for celebrating Christmas. Colorado, Puerto Rico, Florida and Alaska are also other places where you can go for Christmas.

    Re: Christmas Destinations?

I am partial to the South, because of the weather. If you like cold weather, I suggest Christmas in New York City. There are a lot of Christmas shows in NYC during the holiday season, you can shop, and many hotels offer discounts ahead of the New Year. That being said, lots of people want to visit NYC on New Year's Eve, so they can go to Times Square and see the ball drop. If you are like me, and love the South, there is a nice New Year's Eve party in Key West, which is about as south as you can get and still be in the United States. Also, New Orleans is fabulous for Christmas time, lots of music, food, and Cajun Christmas traditions, such as lighting bonfires up and down the Mississippi River for Santa Claus, or to Louisianaians, Papa Noel.

    Enjoy your holiday!

New Orleans sounds like an idea I'll have to look into. We're talking about going away for the time between Christmas and New Years, want something different from our usual (Florida), and couldn't really think of anything that stood out.

DC was the one thought I had, but I'm not a huge fan of the cold and visiting there always means a lot of walking outdoors so I'm not sure it would be a great holiday trip. We ruled out NYC right off the bat because we don't like cold and because that is such a crazy busy/expensive time to visit there. NYC is more my style in the spring or fall!

Honestly if you don't like the cold I would go to Disney in Florida. They have tons of festive activities and everyone is just so bubbly!

That is a great suggestion, Fibromama... So great that the reason it isn't on my list is because I already have an early December trip booked for my 5yo daughter and I and another trip in the works for either January or February for just my husband and I without the kids! I'm a Disney annual passholder so we go there a lot, but usually steer clear of very busy times like Christmas and Easter.

My husband and I got to talking about how hard traveling this summer has been, now that our oldest is in high school and has band practices and football workouts all summer, so we're brainstorming new and different destinations that would be fun for a Christmas vacation trip.

It really is beautiful there in December. Lovely Cajun music, the blues...with Christmas themes. And...if you stay through January 6th, you will get to see the beginnings of Mardi Gras with the 12th night parties. I love being a Louisianaian!

New York and New Orleans are both great around Christmastime...if you have the appreciation for history and the area, Williamsburg VA is really lovely as well.

I have been to Williamsburg during the spring, but not at Christmastime. Do they do some special stuff at Christmas?

    Re: Christmas Destinations?

There are many wonderful Christmas destinations, especially if your staying for New Years. I would recommend New York as my number one choice for where you should go, especially because you can see the ball drop and there are many other nice things. The weather is probably more Christmas like than New Orleans, which was another recommendation, however, lots of nice snow is still probably a luck thing. I go to Ohio during the Christmas, but the excitement for me is because I have family there, so it will probably be less interesting for you.

One other cool place to go in the Midwest is Kansas City. The Plaza decorates up with Christmas lights, so you can shop and see pretty things.

I'm from Massachusetts, and I know lots of people who go up to Vermont or New Hampshire during the winter to go skiing. There aren't any big cities up there, but if you're looking for a quiet getaway the mountains can be beautiful in the winter.

    Re: Christmas Destinations?

One of my favorite places to visit around Christmas is Gatlinburg, Tennessee, which is right outside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Not only do you have the cool mountain air, snow in the trees, and spectacular mountain views, but you also have some really good restaurants and shopping in town. They have a few Christmas stores open up that feature some of the most unique Christmas ornaments, lights, and figurines I have ever seen. The shopping itself is a blast around Christmas, even more fun that other times of the year. They also have a big parade close to Christmas through town, which is all decked out in lights and ornaments. Gatlinburg offers an incredible, traditional Christmas experience that the whole family would enjoy.

Is Gatlinburg better during Christmas than it is the summer? Because the summer traffic in Gatlinburg is murder.

    Re: Christmas Destinations?

I visited many times in my life Key West, Florida. I heard some information about this island anyway, I share with all of you like Key West is an island city. It is part of the Florida Keys and lying roughly 90 miles north of Cuba. It’s a cruise-ship stop also accessible from the mainland via the Overseas Highway. I want to visit again in my next tour of Florida.
