What are some of the more popular stops?

When someone who isn't stateside decides to stop over what are the stops they're looking to make? I can guess something very touristy like say Lady Liberty or Niagara Falls or Rushmore, but what else? Also if anyone decides to answer this - what is something perhaps less popular, but very appealing to you personally. It's interesting to see what one's country looks like from the outside.

    American Roadside Attractions And Stops

DC! We just went 2 weeks so and there is so much touristy stuff to do! Plus it's an essential part of American history that every American should experience at least once. We had the privilege of being at the WWII memorial on D-day anniversary and my children got to talk to WWII veterans, a once in a life time opportunity. They also got to look up their grandma at the Womens service memorial at Arlington. For a non-US resident I think it would be a great place to visit to learn about the country you are visiting.

    Must Tourist Stops in America

The US is so varied that it would be nearly impossible to name one place that is a reflection of the country. I would maybe try and do three or four regions-- I'd go to Philadelphia or Boston for history. Savannah, Charleston and Memphis for the southeast; Austin and Santa Fe for the southwest; San Fran and Seattle for the PNW; Yellowstone and Denver and wind things up in Chicago. It avoids NY and LA which are the obvious choices while giving you a good feel for how varied and diverse the US really is.

I agree with JCase that part of the appeal of the US is that it's so varied. Personally, I think no one should miss the Grand Canyon if going a road trip. No matter how many pictures you've seen or how much you've heard about it, it still leaves you in awe to stand there and see it for yourself. As for cities, I'm a huge fan of New Orleans. To me, it has the most culture of any US city, with a vibrant nightlife, amazing music (blues, jazz), street culture, great food, and friendly, interesting people.

Definitely, definitely, definitely visit Chicago. It's such an amazing city. It has amazing food (I recommend some of the smaller places in Greektown or whatever it's called, but that's because I love Greek/Mediterranean food), amazing culture, and amazing architecture. Also, I recommend New York, LA, and Seattle, for obvious (in my opinion) reasons!

I agree, LA and DC are definitely trademark places to visit. I live in New England, so I only really know about trademarks here in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New York. Here some popular things to see are Mount Monadnock, America's Stonehenge, The Museum of Science, The Man of the Mountain, and of course, New York City is close-by. We don't have too many popular trademarks, but at least we have a few to stop by for a few minutes on the way.
