Childhood fondest memory of a lifetime vacation!!

Hello fellow travelers!! Do any of you have a childhood fondest memory of a lifetime vacation? If so I would love to hear about your vacation spots and why.

I would like to start things off by saying that my parents tried to take us on special vacations every summer. As far back as I can remember we would take long vacations just so we would get to see my Dad's parents and sister's. There were a few summers that were the same memory. However my fondest memory was the year my Grandma turned 70 years young. I may not have gotten to see her very often but the surprise we gave her that year was to last me till now and will continue to be a favorable memory. We told her we were going on a vacation but we never told her where we would end up. That year we got to plan the whole trip and had it mapped, timed and everyplace we wanted to visit that year. We had 2 weeks to get it all done in too. We lived in Texas and by the day my Grandma's Birthday party was planned for we had to cross 3 1/2 States to reach there in time. Her birthday party was on a Saturday and my Dad took the week before and the week after as his 2 weeks so we had plenty of time to get there. Along the way we wanted to visit Meteorite Crater in Arizona, The Petrified Forrest in Arizona, and maybe a few shops along the way. It was a blast getting to enjoy these sites as we traveled to California. We made it to her Birthday party on time and the rest of the family new we were on our way. They kept it a secret from my Grandma and when we got there she didn't recognize us till we were practically in her arms wishing her a Happy Birthday. We all laughed and cried and just loved the moment because she didn't know if she would get to see us that year. After we stayed there 2 nights we had to leave so we could make the rest of our trip and be back home in time for Daddy to be back at work. We went a different route home that year and came through Southern Nevada, Colorado, and Oklahoma down into Texas. Because of the surprise we played on my Grandma that year for me the rest of the trip was kinda a blur but I do remember stopping at some friends house in Durango, Co that year and then going home. It was all worth the trip though to see her face when she seen my Dad standing in front of her to wish her a happy birthday. Her face lit up and then she cried. Now that I am older I miss those special vacations we would take as a family.

So to whomever, please tell me your fondest childhood memory vacations!?

I didn't travel extensively as a child...probably my clearest memories are from our yearly trips to Williamsburg VA. My grandfather was a history teacher and so of course that was his interest, my grandmother on the other hand liked to explore the surrounding areas for new or less 'cliche' awesome finds so we went around the area quite a bit. Then there was also one trip to Alaska and one to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls...the latter probably being my favorite. It was just so impressive and astounding to me!

That was a really sweet story about your Grandma. I am glad your family made the effort to travel such a long way to see her, and also got to see some sights and landmarks on the way. It doesn't sound like there could be a better way to have a family vacation!

My fondest childhood memory about a lifetime vacation would have to be visiting America for the first time. Back then, everywhere we went, and every state we travelled through, was a year to two year vacation. I saw new sights, landmarks, nature and had completely new experiences. We toured Las Vegas, Area 51, the Grand Canyon, California, Florida, the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Michigan Dunes- you name it. I experienced more in my first year or two of living in America, than I have seen of this country in the past 10 years. Hopefully, I will get to do it all again someday.

When I was younger my parents took my brothers and I on a trip to Mackinac Island and I absolutely loved it there. Eventually I grew up, went to school, and took some summer jobs there seasonally. Now I'm moving to the island in November to live there and I couldn't be more excited!

Oh WOW!! That is really cool that you loved it so much to now want to live there. I am not sure I would be able to do that to the one place I really love. It would take away from the fun of the trip to move there and the sites would soon not be appealing to me. If I had to choose a place to live it would be Texas. From there you can get anywhere you want in 1 day to start any vacation. Arkansas and Oklahoma are central spots that you can get anywhere within a day but I just don't like those states to live in as much.

I love the fond memories that everyone is posting. I love hearing stories like this. I hope to read about more from other fellow travelers.

I remember as a child, going to Lakeport, Michigan with a pull behind camper. We made food on the barbeque, enjoyed the water and played with the fire flies at night. It was a great trip for the family and I remember to this day the cedar smell in the closets and overhead cabinets of the camper. I love the outdoors and this was a family trip that I think may have been the start of a love for being in the great outdoors over any other type of vacation.

As a former Michigander who never made it there, I am so enamored with the fact you went and now get to live there. I did have friends bring back salt water taffee and souvenirs and now you have sealed it. It is on the top of my bucket list. Do they still have only horse and bicycle traffic only there?

It can be fun during spending time in this sort of activities. At the moment maid of the mist boat tour can be a lot of reasonable things which can work for the moment specifically.
